PB Triple Header and New Boat

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

PB Triple Header and New Boat

Post by scarkner »

What a great way to christen the new (used) boat!!!

Got it in the water on Sunday and went for a drive around the lake. My dog loves the open bow style, just stands up there with the wind blowing through is ears! Then as soon as the boat stops he would curl up around the seat posts and sleep, waiting for the next run.

Headed out again with the kids and they were facinated by the live wells and were determined to put SOMETHING into the wells. So a long line of tiny blue-gills, perch and sunfish proceeded to be dumped into the wells. Kids agreed to throw them back after a while, but I was still a bit concerned. Would it jinx the boat to have the first fish be so small??? Apparently not! Went out a little later in the day and had a large pike, a personal best, nail my five-o-diamonds. It wasn't a monster for those used to fishing large water bodies, but for my tiny cottage lake, this is a big one! Measured about 2.5 feet long and 6lbs.

Then headed to Kingston to go fishing with my dad who is in his 70s and just rediscovering fishing. We were on a small inlet off the St. Lawrence when I caught onto something big. Having only 10lb leaders on I worked a long time to try to close the gap to this fish, eventually handing the rod over to my dad so he could continue to work it to the dock. Wow, took about 40 minutes, but eventually we had this 25lb carp on the dock! Another personal best... whaaaa? Two in one weekend?

Wanting to see what else was out there, put my line in again and was rewarded after about an hour with another good hit. Certainly not the same power as the carp, but definitely something large and fighting in a way that was different. After a short fight I had about an 8lb Bowfin on the dock. One ugly fish, it was beat up with a big chunk missing from it's tail (perhaps the reason it couldn't fight well. But still, another personal best! The Bowfin, largely ignored in Ontario is actually a fairly popular game-fish in the states, I fish for them in Vermont, didn't realize they were even in the St. Lawrence!

So overall a great weekend and hopefully a sign of a good summer to come (and NOT a sign that all my fishing luck is now used up...)

Thats a nice bowfin. I'nve never eaten one, what are they similar too? I've always wondered f they were more like catfish meat, or eel like.

According to some friends in Vermont that catch them all the time, they did try to eat them once... once...

The meat has very little texture, almost jelly-like and must be cooked pretty much immediately. Consistency is not good. I have heard it compared to carp. Apparently in southern states they do eat it battered and deep fried, cut up small so it cooks quickly all the way through which removes some of the jelly-like texture.

I don't know anyone who keeps them.

Congrats on the new boat!

Great carp and beauty 'fin! I am envious!!

I heard that you need to put bowfin on ice rather quickly to keep them edible. I hear the get mushy quick.
