crankbait rods
crankbait rods
I currently use a Kistler and I hate it!
I feel it is very very wavy and felxible
Is this me? Or the rod?
Who makes a good crank rod?

Lol!!!
I've gone through a few for the same reason. Look at a 764cbrm Champion. I've talked to a few as well as handled it in the store as well as made a few casts with one of the members here. It's not as whippy (pool noodle) as others I have used/handled (gl2 784c cbr/champion 684cb/champion 685cb)
And FYI, the rod was designed by Randy Mcabie who is a Crankbait specialist in his own right.
Every serious cranker I have talked to has at least one of these rods. Some have or want more.

Re: crankbait rods
It comes down to personal preference. You may love one & hate the other...and I could be the complete opposite.
Are you looking for a rod to cast shallow, medium or deep running crankbaits?
I personally use glass rods, after fishing it most don't realize it is a glass rod until I tell them. Most of the manufacturers these days are running their own proprietary graphite/glass blend like Shimano's TC4 you get the weight savings and sensitivity of graphite but the forgiveness that a glass rod offers when a 5lb smallie makes a quick turn under the boat.
Here's where I would be looking if I needed a new crankin stick,
Shimano's TC4 Compre/Crucial crankbait rods
Dobyns Fury 705cb/Champion series 705CB Glass/765CB Glass

Re: crankbait rods
As Brad says there's a big selection out there and it boils down to personal preference. Abu Veritas make a decent crankbait rod for under $100.00, the Shimano Crucial, or the Loomis E6X for just over $200.00 and the Dobyns Champions at the high $200.00's. Dobyns are making a Fury crankbait rod as well but they don't have it in yet so obviously I haven't had it in my hand yet. The others I have in stock at Paddletales.

Re: crankbait rods
Best CB rod I have is an original Fenwick Elitetech (Yellow and Black). I believe its a blend of glass and graphite. picked it up on sale a few years ago from LeBaron.
I also have the dobyns 764cb rm, 805CB RM
and a gloomis cb rod.

Some great advice here
Anyone parting with a Dobyns or Loomis shortly?

Re: crankbait rods
704CB is what I use for 3/16-3/8oz most of the time. Poppers, shallow cranks & ripbaits (up to 1/2oz or so).
764CB for any lure from 3/8oz - 3/4oz works well. Has a unique action. Little bit stronger than the 704CB - almost a 5 power.
Faster action in the tip but doesn't build power as fast going towards the blank. That taper makes it forgiving. Hard to explain but it works really well. The 764CB really really shines with mid depth cranks & lipless. Throwing the mid depth cranks, it is less work than with the 705CB.
805CB is a great rod for deep divers. Fishing true deep divers isn't something I need to do often but when I do this rod is perfect. I've been using this rod to throw large shallow running (< 1') cranks. I also use it for 1oz swimbaits.

Thanks
Is there an overall one?
3 rods would get me thrown out

I use Crucials but you probably expected that
They also double as my Laker jigging sticks.

Re: crankbait rods
My crankbait rods are all in the Dobyns Champion series. I have a 684CB (mainly used for jerkbaits and walking baits), a 704CB (which was my crankbait rod last year but will now be used mainly for target crank baits) and a 765CB Glass (which I bought this year and throws 1/2 and heavier crankbaits a mile). I have used this last one mainly with Kamooki Smart Fish and really love the feeling.

I used Quantum Glass rods,
6,8"
6,10"
7'
7,10"
7,11"
All my glass rods double as Topwater rods.
I throw all my cranks on fluro and topwater baits on braid, the glass rod absorbs everything and the line gives no stretch.

Re: crankbait rods
I just acquired a G Loomis Deep Flex CB Rod and I am a convert!
It is incredible, I feel every bit of action, and it has enough backbone to allow for deeper diving crank baits.
I have had Abu and Shimano Bait casting rods, and I still feel
My Vendetta is a nice Rod, yet I am in love with my G Loomis.

Re: crankbait rods
I don't throw cranks a lot, but when I do it's a squarebill (KVD1.5, 2.5), a wakebait, and sometimes a deeper running 8-10' bait. My rod for all of these is a 7'something (I want to say 7'2") Shimano Compre TC4, MH power. It's perfect for these baits and it not whippy anything at all like a wet noodle. Recommended, especially in the $100-$130 range (at least when I bought it at the start of last season from Ed).
