Smallies on top

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Haven't targeted bass for years but when I did the spook was always my go to top water. I must have 10 different colours and my go to was always the Jimmy Houston spook. It is painted more like fish colours with some sparkle in the paint. I'll have to give the bone coloured one some more try's, haven't used it too much. The Jimmy Houston one was always working too well.

Pop-R, Zara Spook, and Livetarget Walkin' Frog are my go to for open water smallies. Best when the water is calm in the morning, the fish will tell you if they want a topwater, just listen!

Seahawk if your fishing very thick matted weeds then a spinnerbait will probably hang up on you. Try throwing it in the open pockets around the weeds, and don't use a trailer hook it will snag too much.

Storm rattlin chug bug. Does exactly what it's name says. It sits tail down and cast good without hooks fouling on the line. It's the only one I like better than a popR or zara spook.

Yeah, If I were to throw a spinnerbait or buzzbait in there they would just pull out weeds. They won't get snagged really because their hooks point up, but I'll have a salad on my hands.

daveh_cdn wrote:I fish in Ottawa on the Rideau river. I'd love to get better at using top water. I feel it'd be especially useful when throwing wacky rigged senkos into weeds is catching too much weeds / snags. I have a top water hula popper and hollow body frog, but I've never caught with them. Maybe my technique / presentation is bad. I have a Pop-R that I've caught with a couple times.

Daveh_Cdn, thing is with any PopR type bait, the technique is as much about not moving the bait as actually moving it.. Long pauses and I mean LONG pauses between pops will make fish mad.
Patience is key, once you catch a fish on a pause, you'll understand.. Like any technique you have to test it out, see it work and from there its catch and repeat.

Caught some big smallies on the Megabass GiantDog X last week. Action is incredible. Most hits came on the pause. New favorite top water bait :D

Depending on what kind of weeds you're throwing a spinnerbait into , it's relatively weedless.

Here's a little video about it. Hope it helps
