El Nino and Ice

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

El Nino and Ice

Post by Jimmy_1 »

https://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/on-118_metric_e.html

After today it looks like the temps are going up.
Long range forecast models call for an average daily high of -10 till mid March 2016. (A lot of days hovering around 0)

Not sure I am that comfortable venturing onto ice with any machinery in this case. The freezing rain and Jan thaw are sure to follow shortly.
Anyone else feel this way or are you going to brave it anyways?

a lot of open water still....even with it being -24 currently.

:/

Stay safe folks

After this warm up that's coming it's supposed to get cold again. My guess is we'll see a roller coaster in temperatures for the first half of winter. As long as we get more periods of cold the ice will build. I generally wait till I see other people out on the ice before I venture out.

The sky isn't falling....

It is an odd year for sure but sleds and quads will be on ice within a couple weeks. I checked a spot this afternoon that is safe and fishable.

All you need is -10 overnight and we build ice.

Will vehicles be driving all over the ice this season? Maybe but not anytime real soon.

Awareness is certainly key Jimmy, thanks for posting this thread.
Sometimes, when people get comfortable they slip in to pattern behaviour and end up making decisions based on what worked in the past.

Last weekend I was fishing for Splake in a boat while my buddies were ice fishing specks. Different latitude and altitude, so many variables.

The sky isn't falling. Nor was that the intent of this post.
But we won't have safe ice for some time.

The positive temps and rain this weekend isn't going to help and there is still a lot of open water out there.

Risking safety for a possible fish = Not worth it.

Be safe was all.

What's your definition of safe ice? Mine is 4" of good clear black stuff. I have found that twice this week in water that was 10-15' deep. I'm a good 50min south of your link, so I'm thinking there has to be ice up your way on a fewer smaller lakes. The weekend will knock the thickness down but after that it will freeze again & make more ice. It's been an slow start for sure but there will be ice fishing to be had! El Niño sucks!
