Whitefish on my bucket list...

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Whitefish on my bucket list...

Post by rex.stpierre »

Does anyone know a lake with whitefish within an hour of ottawa? Id like to add one of those finicky things to my list of species caught. Time to see what all the fuss is about!
This year I spent most of my money on beer, women and fishing...the rest I wasted.

Have you fished for them there under ice with success?

Search the old posts.... One guy reported getting them the past couple of years on Big Rideau at the beginning of the past couple of ice fishing seasons.

Here is one report:

Big Rideau, Eagle, Crow, Round, Clear and Bob's for sure. Fishable populations? Debatable.

This is hardly the year to be exploring due to Ice conditions.....

Thats the issue they are around but not in numbers where you will run into them by accident. Lakers are king in eastern ontario, they are the prized fish because it is actually quite rare to have lake trout in smaller back lakes this far south, so they are the focus of the stocking and are protected from competing species anywhere where they are naturally reproducing.
I for one would love to see some stocking of whitefish in eastern ontario lakes but I suspect they would just get pounded in the winter and it would be tough to keep them going.
