Beating on the Drum

I went out to my Drum spot this morning; it's a bit of an odd spot as if you go after a rain it is too slick if you go too late in the season the bush is too thick. This morning it was easy to get too, the water was nice and high, the current was slow and steady. It's generally a bit of a pain but It usually holds a number of different species that make it worth the trip.



After three years of fishing this spot I can usually count on getting a quick channel cat and this year was no different.



Next up were the carp. The first one hit hard and after a good fight I pulled the hook. Being a bit lazy I left the drag tight and tried to horse it, giving the expected results. I loosened the drag and tried again. Not too long later this guy hit the shore:



I loved the two toned tail.



At this point I was working the shore hoping the drum were in and I landed this nice shorthead redhorse


When the sun started to hit the water ( the area is a bit sheltered) the drum started to hit... Three of them in quick succession:


This spot does not hold big drum but they put up a nice fight.

This spot hold mooneye eye as well. But none were to be had today (I know a fall spot for them though). This was my last guy from this spot, a brown bullhead:


Having gotten all that I wanted from this spot and a hour left to fish, I thought I would hit my crappie spot. I thought I would try to turn it into a 10 species day seeing as I just got got five.

My crappie spot yielded what I was looking for, for number 6:


Then I hit the regular species for 7, 8, 9, 10









Love the colors on the pumpkinseed in the spring.

I got a nice chunk of largemouth bass, too bad it is OOS. I start looking for walleye and pike but the call came in and I had to pack up and head home to get the kids out the door.

This weeks target is Gar. Fingers crossed.

Btw, pretty sure that's a Yellow Bullhead, the colour and rounded tail fin are the giveaways.

The chin barbels on this one were dark and it does have some faint mottling. The Nation river has some of the lightest colour browns I have ever come across. I check every time to see if its a yellow because of that. I think it's just a bad picture of the tail.

This is a picture of a yellow bullhead caught in the fall for comparison.


I seem to only catch them in the fall. I find the eyes beadier and the pectoral and dorsal fins smaller.
