Salmon season

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Salmon season

Post by Pewit »

Hi, I'm not a beginner, but I just moved in to Ottawa from Europe, so know nothing here.
Was looking forward to cathing some salmon, but couldn't find any.
So what would be approximate dates when it all dies or becomes inactive?

p.s. I'd really appreciate if someone could help me to find some good fishing areas not very far from Ottawa.
And of course I'm always ready to go fishing with somebody. Brought some interesting european takle and knowledge you might be interested in:)

The closest place to ottawa to find some salmon would be Napanee, Ontario. They are very limited there though.

If you take a 3 hours trip to Port hope and surrounding areas you can get some decent fish from shore, fishing in streams for spawning Salmon heading up the river. The run usually happens sometime between august and october and it usually last 3-6 weeks.

The closest place to here that would allow you to fish them all year long would be Lake Ontario, about a two hour drive from ottawa. You would also need a very large boat as this is the great lake system and is a very very big body of water.

Welcome to the forums and the Ottawa area Pewit. To start off with fishing around the local area I suggest you do a search here for shore fishing. Lots of posts and a good map that shows loads of shore fishing spots around the area.

Thank you for your replies!
So is that true that there is no reason to search for salmon or trout from shore until spring?

Meanwhile in the US East coast... :(

You didn't mention trout before. That's a different story. There are plenty of trout lakes within a couple of hours of Ottawa, some more "back country" than others. Lots of factors involved there.

Hey Pewit, first off Welcome!!! There is many opportunities for trout through out the colder months leading to spring. There is many ice opportunities closer to Ottawa, than there is open water. The open water (Weather pending, because some area's will freeze over) is 3-5 hrs drive from Ottawa. Depending on your preference of species, the salmon fishing is more or less done for this yr. If your looking for shore opportunities, get ready for around August. This is when they begin to stage at creek/rivers mouths to run and spawn. Boat access will fire up in late May, but real hot in July. For trout, the winter months (Open water shore fishing) is 99% rainbows. That is open water. Ice can provide most species of trout. I'm known here as mainly a Rainbow fisherman, and would be happy to provide you with some options, possibly not as far as a 4 hr drive.

Drop me a pm, and we can chat.
