Shirleys bay Ice

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Shirleys bay Ice

Post by CCLad »

Has any of you fellow Hawkers been down to the parking lot recently? Just wondering if the bay is still open. I'm hoping so with the recent snow...

By the end of the week its going down every night to -10C or colder pretty much for the rest of the month. If that holds true and the snow holds off it should be good for making some good solid ice!
Cheers,

Lot's of cold weather this week coming TIm. It should make some real good ice. I can see an early start to the ice fishing season this year.
Are you leaving your shack in the same area this year?

Hey Smitty,

Forecast looks great does look great!! :) I'm just hoping the bay was still open when we got that last dump of snow. If it was and I'm guessing so, it definitely will be an early start this year! We will probably set up in the same area for the start of the season. Fishing has been decent in that area. On that note, have you noticed an increase in the average size of the eye's there? Of course you get tiny ones, but the average little ones, 8=9"s all seem to be 11-12"s on average, maybe the Mar - June slot size is working... Good to see any ways!

Depending on the fishing, we may move further out once the ice gets there... Where are you setting up?

Who had the rink last year? I have been racking my brain but can't remember if it was you cclad?

My little blue hut will be in the same spot, almost straight out from the launch. I was thinking of moving it West, i hear the shallower water there is actually pretty productive, but i was surprised how much the snow depth varies just moving a little West. Is that normal at Shirley? This is only my second year with a hut.

I guess the snow can build up a bit more due to the wind break from the cause way, but Im guessing the snow builds up were it feels like it :)

No it wasn't me with the rink, definitely not that motivated and prefer the warm confines of the hut as opposed to out door activities. For fishing, I have fished west towards the causeway lots, seems its better and more product to the east, off the point.

Interesting... That looks not half bad! Driving along the parkway yesterday it was almost all open except for a few shore areas had that yellow goo. The BYC web cams were the same.

Wasn't brave enough to walk and see how thick ice is; my guess would be 1" by shore and 1/2" 40ft out

Thanks for the efforts Hoglog! The ice is well ahead of last year to this point. We just need the snow to lay off for a week. The thermostat is dropping heavy in the next bit.... Wont be long now :)

I won't be venturing out quite yet.

I'll wait until a couple of you guys fall through the ice and tell me what the depth is.

Then I'll set up beside your memorial markers.

Just got back from Shirleys. 5 inches of solid ice 300 yards off shore.
