Buckham's Bay report and shopping tips for beginners

Post by JeffintheBay »

Hey Guys,

Got on the ice over the weekend on Buckham's bay- my first real try at ice fishing. Lots of people driving vehicles, at least a foot of ice with pretty heavy fog cutting light levels. The slush is a couple feet deep on some water access points and deserves some caution. It ate my ATV on the way home, but nothing the winch couldn't handle.

We pretty much settled in about of a third of the way across in about 12 feet of water, across from the gov't ramp - nothing special and pretty much in line with everyone else's shack. It was a slow start, until Fishbock made the scene with some shiners to share and save the day. Smaller perch showed up sporadically throughout the afternoon and were hitting chunks of shiner jigged by hand or suspended absolutely still.

About 4 pm small walleye started cruising through- first one to Fishboch who was jigging shiner parts, second on a Jawjacker with a shiner/jig combo, and the last was mine. This last fish was a little different in that it hit a moving bait quick enough that it was hooked up before it appeared on the finder.

First fish on a jaw jacker. This device is super sensitive...

We wrapped up around 7 pm - poker night, after all.

I was a little surprised at how much fun I had. There is something to be said for plunking a bait through a freshly drilled hole and watch something come up off the bottom to smash it on the way down.

I thought I'd pass along some tips since we just recently kitted up and may have the scoop on some deals:

Best price I could find on picks: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000ZK ... UTF8&psc=1

I converted my Humminbird (a 597 HD DI) unit to portable with a transducer that was on sale at CTC last week http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/hummi ... 6615p.html and a portable caddy that includes the battery . I picked up the caddy at Radioworld- they don't seem to have it listed. Here is the kit: https://www.amazon.com/Humminbird-40690 ... ords=ptc+u. Pretty sweet having GPS and Hydrographic mapping to pick drill sites.

We picked up a Frabill 6x12 pop up shelter for 250ish at Cabela's Kanata. I think they still have some- apparently they got a whole skid too late for the boxing day sale- but that may just be BS. Funny thing is they ain't in the catalog.

We used the Clam drill auger conversion kit to mount a 20 v drill to a cheap manual auger. Works great- the handles are really nice during uh, torque events. Now I have the drill to drive shelter anchors too. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Clam-Drill-A ... /206692575 Image

Which reminds me- you can get a bit to drive shelter anchors too: https://www.amazon.com/Eskimo-Anchor-Po ... B00LDYGND0

Hope this information can help someone.

Take care!
