The NEW FLY FISHER. "Giant Nipigon Pike." ep1

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

The NEW FLY FISHER. "Giant Nipigon Pike." ep1

Post by Moosebunk »

This past summer I had one new and cool opportunity to film with "The New Fly Fisher" T.V. show through Onaman River Resort on Lake Nipigon. Over five days, camped out on a quiet and remote island, we managed to shoot two full episodes in the one trip. Catching brook trout had been the main goal, but the pike fishing was so incredible that host Bill just couldn't help himself. A short write-up of how it came to be, which includes the link to the full first T.V. episode on the pike fishing is posted up... Read and watch on if you like... :D

Shouldn't be too long and the brook trout episode will come along too.

Hard to imagine the damage that could have been done if two guys were fishing and we didn't have to slow down with all the filming details. Barely fishing myself I picked up the 49, 46.5 and a 42 while off camera or prefishing. Bill picked up a 44.5, 44 plus 11 more over 40. Mostly solo hours between Bill and I, we probably fished about 9-10 hours total. The pike truly hated everything thrown at them, a sign those fish were fresh and worth seeking out. There's a new area to hopefully hit this year, it'll be an undertaking but looking for even better. There's no way the fly rod won't be going.

Thanks for watching doods...

Great fishing (guiding) again Drew!
I realize for a TV show Bill does need to speak... but geez, hope your ears grew back after that.

1984...DOOD! $5.99 at Doctor Music in Perth. Had to save up two weeks of my $5 allowance to buy my first ever cassette tape. Eight years old.

Got all the bases covered man!

Chris... if you pitched a tent up there with a buddy, rented a tinny or cached boat and fished just the nearby back lakes alone, you could make for 4-5 weeks of never fishing the same water. :D

I finally had an opening in my schedule to read the entire report. (First run, i only watched the NFF vid.)
Another fantastic read, and pics, sure looks to be an awesome place and amazing fishery. Thanks for putting that together and sharing.
Not long now until another open water season begins.

Question...
Were bears a problem this year? When backcountry camping in Quetico and Algonquin, we always cook away from our tents, suspend our food and the clothing worn while cooking between trees to avoid trouble. How did you protect your food?

No trouble with bears this time around. Probably two things helped...

1. Loki... the dog... which is quite used to scaring bears off the resort and a couple times while there got riled up about things going bump in the night.

2. The fact we were way, way offshore camping on an island. May not have been a bear around when we got there and one maybe wouldn't bother with four guys and a dog around.

Bears have certainly been an issue in the past though... thankfully not this time. :D

"Turntable."

We can both agree then, it's actually such a wicked album beginning to end. TS would have been wild to see during their prime when playing all over NY State.

Little marathon of videos yesterday at lunch hour... including Captain Howdy, The Price, Burn in Hell and "We're Not Gonna Take It" with the new softer version too.
