Pike cut offs

I have a question for the experienced anglers here. My fave fishing spot is mostly grassy an swampy. I mostly texas rigged a creature to a flippin hook with a pegged tungsten weight to 30# braid. Problem is this year there are more pikes than bass in that spot so i get cut off a lot. My question is any suggestion on what kind of leader material that could withstand those toothy critters? I've heard of using 60-80 lbs fluoro leaders using crimps instead of knots.

You can buy metal leaders or buy/ make your own fluro leaders.

The bigger the pike the stronger the fluro should be...but even for smaller pike I wouldn't start at anything less than 80 pounds. You still my occasionally get a cut off but it will be a rare event.

hmm... 80 lbs fluro is stiff and really good for larger fish.... I have had good luck with 20 lb fluro leader and Pike. Like scuro indicated the higher you go the fewer biteoffs you will get. You should be able to get away with something like 30 lb big game as well if you do not like the cost of fluro.

Braid is not generally good for abrasion resistance.

I agree with the above. 18"-24" 30-40lb fluoro leader with A REALLY slim knot like the FG knot or the albright or alberto is fine. I find any crimped metal leaders although "pike proof" just snag weed and make more trouble than they are worth. Feel for tooth nicks after all run ins with pike.

good luck

I use Seagar 50# and have yet to lose a fish.

If it's big you do usually need to cut off a bit after you land one though.

Thanks guys....i bought through BPS a pack of Knot 2 Kinky nickel-titanium leader wire 18lbs. Diameter is .010",not stiff at all, you can tie a 3 wrap clinch knot to a hook and a albright to the braid main line. Not cheap, bout $15 for 15ft of it, i make 10" leaders. Caught a few descent pikes with it, so far no cut offs, no nicks on leader..seems to be good stuff.

Was gonna suggest Knot to Kinky but ya found it. If you are flipping into the junk you may want to bulk your braid up to 50 lbs at least as well.
