Weather forecasting

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Weather forecasting

Does anyone know of a site that doesn't consistently get the forecast wrong?

Re: accuweather, just this morning they say "A brief morning shower or two", yet when I go to their hourly listing they show showers at 1 PM, :? which is it ?!?

Well, in their defense, 1PM is afternoon - not morning. ;)

They also put a percentage on the change of rain so you can use that to help make your decision.

I was just talking with some friends about this last week. I live by those reports. 15 years ago the only thing the reports were accurate for was what the weather was guaranteed not to be. Now-a-days I find the 24 hour report almost spot on (90% probability) 3 days out pretty close (75%), one week out (50%); Temperature, wind and precipitation all generally add up.

In Ottawa you gotta factor in some variance for the valley... Off of lake Ontario you get Lake effect.

I use them for fishing, my buddy for cycling.

As far as probability of precipitation goes with the forecast, what most folks don't realize is that when it says a 40% chance of precip it means that 40% of the coverage area has a chance of rain or snow, not that there is a 40% chance of showers in any spot in the area. That's how it was described to me, if that makes sense.

It's very confusing, "40% of the coverage area has a chance of rain or snow", how much of a chance? Will 40% of the area definitely get precip? What are the boundaries of the coverage area? Which 40% will get wet? I find Accuweather to be OK short term, but the next day forecasts usually change overnight, I have to give 48 hours notice for time off and it sucks to sit at home when the weather prohibits fishing. :(

They go by past data that has been collected. When they say 40% chance of rain it means whatever the conditions are or were in the past 40% of the time it rains

I can fish in anything so I really only need wind forecasts. I use windfinder and windguru, fairly accurate. Unless I'm seeing a 40 mm rain day I go anyways.
