Post-storm splake
The series of heatwaves finally ended last week with that epic Friday storm, so on Saturday I went to a stocked splake lake in the Madawaska/Whitney area, accessed via abandoned logging roads and ATV/snowmobile trails.
The splake were suspended at depths from 20 to 70 feet, and I fished for them from a canoe with small spoons baited with bits of cut minnow, trolled on leadcore line using a Fenwick PLP 55 and ABU 6000C. The PLP is a 2-piece muskie rod that can withstand the strain of trolling leadcore, and I find it easy to pack and transport to remote back lakes.
I can extend my right arm like Inspector Gadget, apparently.
Some 1 ¾ to 2 lb. splake (stocked as fingerlings in 2017) caught that day on a hammered blue chrome Devle-Dog.

Wtg, looks like some fine eating there.Always nice to be successful when on a back lake tour.
Gotta love Sportspal canoes for lightweight carrying. I have a similar setup using an old 1.5hp.
Cheers

Fantastic report, thanks for sharing!
I usually leave the trout alone in the fall and switch gears to walleye but this report has me wanting to go back for more trout! Thanks again for sharing with us!

great outing for ya. that fillet looks delicious!
Re: Post-storm splake
That's a quality set up with the quad/rack combo! I have a 2 piece shimano trolling rod (9' foot) that I use for lead core. How long is that musky rod you are using ?

I looked it up, it's rather short at 5 1/2ft. Easy to pack in for sure.

A 2 piece 5.5 foot musky rod... that really is a perfect setup for backcountry lead core ... well done

Yes, smitty55 is correct. The Fenwick was made in 1965 or 1966, and I bought it in mint condition, complete with rod bag and case, for a song on eBay several years ago. I've been on the lookout to buy more PLP 55s (as well as Conolons in the same configuration) for leadcore trolling, for myself and other fishing friends

Nice pics and looks like a great trip.
That area still holds some nice special finds.
