Underwater Cameras?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Underwater Cameras?

Post by MarkM »

Hey guys just wondering who uses an underwater camera for ice fishing and if they like them etc. I’m thinking of buying one but not sure just yet. I have a Marcum M5 already but thought it would be neat to have a camera.

I think I’ve read that the water needs to be clear but what about depth images? How far does a camera read and will it work in low light conditions?

Let me know your thoughts please.

I bought the aquavu microrevolution 5.0 this fall. I've only used it about 7 times icefishing, but so far I like it. During the day I turn my sonar off and just use the camera to watch my lure. It is especially useful for finding weeds, structure and bottom type before setting up my tent. It's amazing watching the fish come in, watch the lure and bite. It improved my hookup ratio for panfish as I can see whether the fish takes the hook in its mouth or just tugs on the bait. I had been turning it off a night, because you can't see far, especially on the Ottawa. But recently I was on Clayton lake on a hot bite that shut down at dusk. Out of frustration I turned the camera back on with the IR light and angled the camera to look at a downward angle to stay above the silt. The fish were still there swimming around my lures, but they weren't moving. The zooplankton had risen out of the silt and the fish were picking them off when they swam in front of their nose. I tried lots of other baits, but I couldn't get another bite. Still it was really cool watching the daphnia and chaoborus larvae fluttering around and at least I knew what was going on. I also lost my mind at Shirley's Bay while I was catching perch in low light and I watched a really nice walleye roll right by the camera! Too bad it didn't stick around for me.

The only thing that bothers me about it, is the mounting threads are only on the top?!? But I now hang it from a crossbar on my flip over for comfortable viewing. I also got a car charger and soft case via a mail in offer after I purchased it.
