Lake Ontario lake trout

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Lake Ontario lake trout

Post by Chasenic »

Wondering if anyone know’s somewhere I can walk out to ice fish Lake Ontario lake trout? Not even sure if that is a possibility. I’ve tried doing research and can’t find much.

In Eastern Ontario anglers go out around the Amherst Island area to ice fish for lake trout between the island and north shore. There are a couple access points west of the ferry. You will usually see some huts out there.

Please note there is current in the area and the ferry runs all winter and it can be a very windy area, which results in potentially unstable, variable and quickly changing ice conditions. If unfamiliar with the area... spud your way out, wear a floater suit, carry ice picks and drag a rope behind you and ideally don't go alone. Several times over the last few years anglers have had to be rescued from that area when the ice they were on broke off and separated from the main ice pack.

A few on my friends were out there a couple times about a week ago, fishing was slow. The ice were they were was 5-6 inches but with this warm spell and some good winds earlier in the week I am not sure if the ice survived.

When the ice is safe and the fish have moved in the fishing can be awesome, with a chance at a 20 pound plus laker!!

I am hoping to make it out there but waiting on safe ice reports and fish being caught from my friends who live down there, before I make the drive.

If I don't make it out there on the ice then hopefully I should be out there in the boat by late March!! Much easier fishing in the boat.

Here are a couple from last March!!

No problem. Best of luck if you make it out and be careful of the ice. And bring heavy jigging lures, with the current it will sweep smaller lures to the side making it harder to fish and see your lure on sonar.
