Livewell size

Post by BiancoBaits »

Hi all,

For those that have fished tournaments, how big is your livewell? It seems that in the Ottawa area, bass tournament bags usually ring in around 20 lbs. I have a 16 gal livewell in my boat with a fresh water pump in but not recirculate. Is 16 gal too small to hold 20 lbs of fish to keep them alive for the day (assuming I can actually catch 20 lbs…)?

Thanks

A 16 gallon livewell might be a little small, or you definitely will need to run the pump a lot, and consider using lots of ice in hot weather to keep the livewell temperature cool which decreases fish activity and increases the amount of dissolved oxygen the water can hold.

My boat has a 20 gallon livewell (I believe) with pump out and recirc and I do not like using it during hot summer tournament days.... and I never catch 20 pounds. lol

I seldom use recirc unless I'm running. I prefer to keep bringing in fresh water. I have a timer that I believe runs 2 minutes on, 1 minute off. 16 gallons should be ok. I have trouble finding 20 lbs too.
