Quebec Salmon and trout

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Quebec Salmon and trout

Post by Chasenic »

My parents recently purchased a cottage on the Quebec side, so I’m going to be doing a lot of fishing up there in the coming years. This weekend was my first real try at fishing the lake and it went amazing.

It’s a massive shield lake with a big basin that is about 330ft in the middle, springs, steep drop offs and lots of sand and rock. Perfect trout lake. I check the regs, lake trout and LANDLOCKED SALMON are open. I wasn’t sure if there would be a good fish able population or not so my goal was to find out.

First area I fish in is the inflow of the lake. I start trolling leadcore with a spoon. Trolling between 30-60ft. No bites but marking lots of bait and some fish. I decided to go to where I got the most marks right at the mouth of the river.

I pitch out a gold jigging spoon and first cast big bite! I set the hook and break the fish off. Grab another rod and It has a gold jigging rap on it so why not throw it. A few cast and a few bites later I land one.

A nice big male!

I keep fishing and realize the bites are all coming when I cast shallow so I move the boat in closer.

Nothing like casting for trout and salmon in shallow water. I could actually see the trout and salmon chasing my lure and trying to strike it.

Between the current and the excitement I only managed to land 1 more fish a nice lake trout!

It’s now 12 and I have to head back to the cottage because there’s work to be done now. But I have the next morning reserved for fishing.

Next day comes around and I head straight to the spot. Start casting and not long another laker.

Not long the wind starts to pick up and on this lake I can’t mess around. But there’s always time for a couple more casts and luckily I did. Smaller but still a nice female salmon!

Hopefully I’ll be seeing more of these soon. Gonna keep posting on this thread if I do!

Those are very healthy looking Lakers ! I'm jealous, still another couple weeks before I can get after them on my lake.
Curious what the water temps were like, how deep were you fishing, and what they were biting (same as first post) ? Thanks, always trying to learn something new..

Yes I’m looking forward to zone 18 opener! Water temps were 37-42 so still very cold. Last weekend the deep basin was almost completely skimmed over on my way to the spot. All fish were caught casting in 10-20ft of water. Besides the 1 big laker was caught trolling leadcore and a spoon in 30ft of water.

Those were the lures I casted and pitched. Then trolling was a smallish smelt spoon.
