I recently moved and am on the Mississippi river. I want to try my fly rod and want to know where I can get some flies to toss at the bass out of my kayak. Thanks for looking.

Well we still have week to go before we an toss flies them... ;-)

But in terms of where you can find them, you can check out SAIL (in the Train Yards) or the Green Drake (on Holland). SAIL typically has cheaper flies (in price and quality), though the Green Drake brings in patterns you won't find at SAIL.

Just to add , two weeks actually..
Also if you are wondering what works, two patterns that always work for me are buggers and boobies...plus my own secret one that slays them dead.

I was in Bait casters today and noticed they had a few different 'selections' in packages by the front door. One was poppers for bass ~ 20$ if I remember right, about a dozen different flies. Other choices were terrestrials, nymphs, emergers, dry flies, streamers about 6 different packs.

Good on em for diversifying, would have bought a pack myself by I tie my own.

Action Sports on St. Laurent and LeBaron both keep good stock too.

My favourite fly for bass is a large mosquito pattern with two stripes on each wing. Lay it on the water so it sits up high and watch the action. Nothing quite as thrilling as seeing a bass break the water.

As for fly fishing from a Kayak, I am hoping to try that for the first time this weekend. I usually use my spinning rods and even that took a while to get used to. Not sure I have enough coordination to fly fish from one!

There are a couple of Canadian guys tying their own flies and selling them on Ebay. I've purchased a few from them and been quite satisfied with their work.

No need to get too complicated with smallmouth flies, either. I must have caught 90% of my bass last year on a bead-headed Woolly Bugger.

Reelflies.ca has some nice stuff (no financial interest)

Got into tying a few years ago, settled on a clouser, wooly bugger, and some poppers. Still have some left.

A person can get all creative with foam poppers. :D
