Hey I’ve just picked up a new jiffy auger to me bought off a reliable guy and he just had it tuned and never used after.. took it out and went to cut my first hole and half way thru the cut.. the auger bogs out and then I have to pick up and let auger start to spin again before putting back down.. what could the problem be?

did you let it warm up first? did you have issues with other holes besides the first?

How old is the gas in it. If it's not fresh replace with a new mixture.

Definitely if not new gas... replace gas with new premium and add some Seafoam in the gas.

Does the auger seem to fully rev up if you just let it spin and not cutting?

My buddy last year had an old power auger, hear was the issues with it...

"Auger cuts a bit with sharpened blades but as got deeper into the ice it would bog down and stall. When you press the throttle handle it does not seem to rev up fully and it you pull on cable it revs more and spins faster but then would die."

I had my small engine mechanic look at it and this is what his thoughts were...

" I think it had too many hours on it back in the 80s when I had carb off could see some deep scoring in the piston but I think main issue is that crank seal because it can’t keep up with the fuel not enough crankcase vacuum it stayed running for me in heated shop and I found if you didn’t put weight on it while cutting it was okay and would slowly cut to water but if there is too much load it can’t handle it"

Based on price of parts my buddy did not bother to get his old auger fixed.

Hopefully nothing major with your auger, maybe just some fresh gas and a carb cleaning?

Good luck.
