Boat weight and towing capacity?

Post by Mr.J. »

I'm going to be going out a shopping for a new family vehicle.

I would like for this new vehicle to also be able to tow the boat.

The vehicle I have now, and will be keeping, has a very high towing capacity so it was never a concern, but the one I am looking at has a much lower towing capacity.

How do I find out what the weight of my boat and trailer and motor might be without finding a vehicle wiegh station?

Princecraft pro 162 with a 40 horse.

Mr J: The Prinecraft website should give you that info.

weight

Mr. J,
Your motor manufacturer will have the weight for your motor as well.
Don't forget gas weighs about 5lb/gallon. Batteries can weigh up to 65 lbs.

Ed and H. Larry are right, for exact weights check with the company.

Your boat full of gear and gas would weigh about 1600lbs.

Cheers

If I remember right my 162prince with 40hp 4str was 1550lbs with 2 batteries and bow mount.
Once the rest of the gear is added (anchor, tackle box , rods ect) 1650 is a good #.

So what are you looking at ?

Try going to the dump. they might let you use their drive on scales. Have them weigh your vehicle with the trailor and without.

Hope that helps.

Also,
Before becoming a photographer, I was a car salesman. There's a little known fact in the industry that everyone with a Big boat or camper should know. Just because a vehicle's towing weight is enough to carry your load. The stock tires may not. The stock tires onChevy/GMC pickups(maybe more manufacturers) can't carry the weight the truck is rated for.

Something to consider.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info guys.

My main vehicle for towing the boat is a Hyundai Santa Fe, works great almost feels like I am not pulling anything but we need a bigger family vehicle so I am looking at the Hyndai Entourage but it only has a towing capacity of 1000lbs without trailer brakes and 3500lbs with trailer brakes.

There will probably only be a few times a year where I would want to use the van for towing the boat so I guess I can still load the family in the Santa Fe when this is required.

So it's a done deal.

I get the van on Tuesday and won't be adding a trailer hitch to it.

If I am going on a camping trip I can use the Santa Fe and load the tons of stuff I always seem to be carting around in the boat.

Trailer

Post by waynerb66 »

I have a 2002 Nissan Altima. It is rated for 1000lbs. I have a 14 foot Misty River that weighs 350lbs, my motor weighs in at just over 100lbs. The only problem is how much the trailer weighs. I only see GVWR on it, not the actual weight of the trailer. Unless I am looking in the wrong place. I am a little concerned if I have to travel some distance with it. My trailer is a 1998 Northlander. It is a steel trailer.
Any thoughts?

Wayner,

I have a similar size boat (14 Lund). When I tried to figure out what my rig weighed, I came up with this - hope it helps:

Boat: 295lb
Trailer: 237
Motor: 108
Equipment: 100
Battery: 50
Gas: 20
Total: 810lbs

Joco:

The reason 2 X 5 gallons of gasoline felt like more than 50 lbs was because gasoline weighs 7.4 lbs per Imperial gallon. Therefore, 5 gallons weighs 37 pounds and 2 X 5 gallons weighs 74 pounds. Hope that helped. Jay
