Need some fishing boat advice

Just picked up a boat motor n trailer.. can anyone recommend a cheaper spot to get the motor serviced? also know where I can get the good carpet for the floor?

I used indoor/outdoor carpet that I picked up from home depot. I think it was $20 for 10'x8' roll. Holds up really well, no fading in the sun, I'm very happy with it, I'd use it again. As for you motor, can't help you much, I'm starting to try and do some of my own repairs, so far so good. lots of video's and forums online

Somewhere else I had read a guy got it off the BassCat website. I just checked and it is 24oz carpet for $9.00 a foot.

As for a good place to get your motor serviced; I only go to Raisin river Marine in lancaster because it is close to my familly cottage and they have never steered me wrong. The specialise in Merc and Evinrude if I remember correctly.

As for price, I guess it really boils down to what you need to have done...

If you want something that will last for a lot longer and is better that carpet check out a flooring called hydro-turf. Nicest stuff to put down in a boat.

Just an FYI,

I have seen this boat a few weeks ago and the carpet does look great. I don't know how long it will last or what oz the carpet is rated for but it looks good and it was done a couple of years ago.

What is the actual package you got? Make and model of the boat and motor?

its a 16 foot smokercraft aluminum with a 1990 25 hp mercury outboard.. after i replace some plywood im probably picking up some indoor outdoor carpet for sure.. I think the carb needs a rebuild on the motor and possibly a fuel filter.. replacing the plugs just for the heck of it

I am sure Raisin river could help you out with any of the motor reconditioning you need done. Laurentian seems to have a pretty good reputation on this board as well so I don't think you can go wrong either way. I have also had pretty good success with Pirate cove but 90% of my work has been done at Raisin River so that is my number one choice.

Rick totally re configured his boat before carpeting it. His is a 14 footer but basically looks like a mini bass boat now. He did an awesome job

When I re-carpeted my boat, I bought marine grade carpet from the Chandlery. Definitely more expensive then the Home Depot stuff, but I think it will last longer.

Ill probably buy a carb kit and hammer it out myself.. im pretty handy with technical stuff

It's kind of a seasonal thing so they have to make their money somewhere. Having said that, the carb rebuild is probably what is the most costly. The plugs and the fuel filter you should be able to do yourself. I just did my plugs last week and it cost me almost $50.00 for 4 ngk plugs (the ones recomended for my motor) and about a half hour of my time to do it. Fuel filters are even easier if you are trying to get the costs down.

I have EFI and do not have any experience with carbs at all. Another place a lot of people speak highly of is AIM marine. I personally have no experience with them but they apparently do awesome work if you want to price out another option.

Since the motor is new to you, it might also be a good idea to get the impeller checked to see if it should be replaced. Not a necessity, but might not be a bad idea if you don't know the history of the motor. I had to do mine last season because the motor wasn't getting enough water to cool it even though it had a pretty good stream coming out. It was a very noticeable difference once it was changed.

Just remember, any toy you buy ends up costing money to keep in good shape. Preventative maintenance should save you money in the long run.
