Prop change

Post by Markus »

I was just preping the boat for the Niagara tomorrow and went about changing my prop.

Couple of questions...

1. Is there supposed to be a lot of greese on the prop shaft? Mine had hardly any I was wondering if I should add some. If I do...all I have is a tub of bearing greese, will this do?

2. Is the prop supposed to spin freely when spun by hand in Neutral? Mine does, but it just feels like a tad bit of the prop is rubbing the inside wall of the housing. It spins nice though.

Thanks guys.

Prop change

I have had the same problems with the prop seeming to rub a bit. What I have done is turn the spacer washer from large side down to small side down and this allowed an extra 1/8 of an inch and this stopped any rubbing. I do put a bit of grease on the spline to ensure easy and quick changes if needed.

Same here.

Bit of grease on the prop shaft ... no need to go crazy, just enough so the prop can slide on and off.

My prop rubs a little too. Not nearly as bad as some of the other boat I have see either.

Sounds like you're OK.

Mine spins freely

On a T.V. show the other the guy suggested that when we are trailering the boat to put it in gear to prevent the prop from spinning all the time and adding extra wear on it. ANybody do this?

I always put mine in gear when I tow, depending on the style of boat, trailer and prop I don't they will all spin. If you have a transom saver I don't think enough wind can get at it to make it spin.

I put a little grease on my propshaft about two or three times a season, it gets pretty hot in there and I think as it gets hot it gets soft and just runs off into the water.

I don't think your prop should rub on anything though. Like Seaweed said, is your thrust washer on the right way?

1. grease..the grease does not have to be there its just for getting the prop
on and off easier.
2. spin in neutral....if it spins well its good...
rubbing..the rubbing thing is not a great thing to have..
maybe just a not totally straight shaft?
try and rectify the prob if it actually rubs..
the last thing i'd worry about is my prop turning slowly
while outboard is in neutral on the highway...they spin abillion times a
minute when they are working..whats a couple of revs in neutral
gonna do?

All is well. The rubbing was very very minor and it was gone after todays run on the river. I actually get 5 mph more with the new prop. Amazing what a couple small nocks will do.

Thanks for the tips guys!

Marcus,

What pitch of prop were you using and what did you go to?

Alumunium or stainless?

You know what Joe....I have no idea!

When I first got my boat, I decided to get a spare prop just in case I ran into troubles. I got the exact same one I already had on.

I have no idea what the pitch is. I don't even know what it is made of.

It's black.

Well speaking of dummies, thats me when it comes to props. How are they rated/categorized what ever. Do they have #s, angles and what do they mean?
