So I've got about 400$ to play with, don't really need mapping features as I use my Garmin Nuvi to find out where I am.
I've been looking at the Vexilar FL-8SE Genz
or the
Humminbird ICE 35
Finding good stats on either is maddeningly difficult to make sense out of.
Anyone with some good insight or recommendation on where to go to see them side by side / check parameters and how they work?
Recommendations and suggestions appreciated.
Entry Level Ice Flasher
Re: Entry Level Ice Flasher
I normally fish shallow waters for various pan fish, trout, fall fish ie. 6foot range average up to max 20ft
The max depth I could ever reasonably expect to fish is about 180' on the big hole at Round Lake for Ling, not too worried about this though as I usually just fish it blind and still catch lots.

Re: Entry Level Ice Flasher
Lots of reviews out there. I would also do a search on http://www.iceshanty.com/ for info.
I really don't think you can go wrong in that price range. I got my Elite 4x All Season Portable pack last year on sale at a good price, plus Lowrance had a $50 promo rebate on, so I'll never complain. It also comes with summertime suction mount. Plus I still have my old Eagle Silent Sixty flasher which still is great for most things I could ever want compared to a 1oz sinker lol.
I'm sure you'll enjoy your choice. They certainly can be nice to have.
Cheers

Re: Entry Level Ice Flasher
Any flasher is better than no flasher. They all basically do the same thing.
At that price range an FL8 will suit your needs perfectly.
The only thing I'd be searching out is issues folks have had with either unit you are looking at.
An added bonus is the Vexilars always have a higher resell value even 10 years down the road if you do decide to upgrade.
I'm hosting a Vexilar Demo day on Feb 14th on Lower Rideau Lake if you'd like to check out a few different models, kinda late in the season for you at that point though.

Re: Entry Level Ice Flasher
I have the vexilar fl 8 and it does the job just fine.
I have never had an issue with it and I bought it used from a guy on fish-hawk who is pretty hard core.
It sure changed the way I fish.
Just my 2 cents.
Be safe and fish on!!!

Keep your line in the water and there will always be a smile on your face.

I have an entry level - Marcum VX1 from 6 years ago. It does the job well! If only it could make them bite.
