ETEC decals lifting off

Post by devy »

Bought my 75 hp ETEC in 2011... last fall noted that decals on back of cowling had curled up and lifted off.. When I picked up the boat this spring from heated storage, noted that red striping on port side of cowling had started to curl as well. Searched on internet and found that this has been happening to others... Talked to dealer this morning who stated that should of had clear coating put over decals.. Told them that if this was the case, then BRP should be doing this.. Phoned Evinrude in Wisconsin and talked to technician who stated that because of extended warranty, decals should be covered... Just sent pictures to dealer who has to follow up... He said that clear coat should not be necessary. Expressed my displeasure about this :x ... Anybody else have problems with decals coming off?. I do wax cowling as advised in manual.

Clear coat is not the issue if they are curling.
It is the adhesive and the vinyl stock of the decal.

Get clear nail polish and hit the edges. Old sign guy trick.

I suspect someone used cast vinyl which really shrinks and does not take well to temp changes of the substrate.

Clear coating over just causes additional challenges when it starts to crack.

It's sad to say but it's cheap vinyl stickers they use.... Friend I'm mine had it happen so he remover it all and new ones made up(he owns his own sign shop) you could do the same

Stickers..
They come off everything.. My buddy's Minnkota Trolling motor says kota on it now.

So are they going to replace them?
I've never heard of adding a clear coat over stickers.. :?

Thanks for those who provided feedback.. Got back email from dealer who contacted BRP directly. Dealer said that because motor is covered for 2 years extra warranty that I would be covered but still have to pay $50.00 deductible... BRP is looking into weather or not there is a service bulletin on this or not so that $50.00 can be waved... I would have to bring motor in to having hours read on it and then to have decals put on if I go the warranty root. Set of decals runs around $139.00. Phoned and talked to dealer who know that I am a good customer. Trying to push dealer for them to cover the $50.00.. I noted one company on line outboarddecals.com ... Has anyone ever dealt with them or does someone know another supplier for future reference?
