Merc Trim Issue?

Post by nanookofnj »

Hello.

Have been having issues over the past few years with the trim on my 50 hp Merc 2 stroke. Trim down is always fine, trim up is always the problem.

I've purchased and installed 2 new trim relays on the blue wire relay and the up function is still hit or miss, eventually goes up, but is never consistent. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you checked the switch?

Do you have more than one switch and is it happening on all of them or just the one on the throttle?

Thanks guys.

Yep, same results on all 3 switches(bow, throttle and the main one on the motor).

I have not bled the air. Is that an easy task?

Not sure what system you have, but I had the same problem with the
PT&T on my '92 90 HP Merc with the single ram. Down was never a problem,
up was the finicky tempermental SOB!! Sometimes I would have to yank
the heck outta the lower unit then it would seem to "catch" and work for a time,
but inevitably would conk out on me again. Impossible to "yank on it" when in the
water, I'd have to come ashore and get it back up.
Turned out to be an "air lock" somewhere in the system, bled it out and has worked
fine ever since. Lower then raise engine through full cycle, open cap to let ouit air
and top up fluid. Do this complete routine a few times and there should be no air
pockets left in the system.
**CAUTION** Don't try lowering/raising a bunch of times in rapid succesion. I did that and
blew the side right out of the fluid reservoir. Had to buy a new motor/reservoir from the U.S.
(naturally it's a sealed unit     ) and then perform the 'bleed' properly. :( :(
Another one of my "expensive lessons" :P :P

Good Luck!! 8)
