Minn Kota quick release bracket

Post by Trout_83 »

Hoping to get some feedback/advice on quick release brackets for my Minn Kota Terrova 80lb 60 inch shaft. I'm mainly hoping to be able to have my Minn Kota locked/secured to my boat (I don't really see myself removing the motor very often, I just don't want my Minn Kota/iPilot to get stolen). I've been looking at the Minn Kota website and I've noticed there are different models. Does anyone have any of these ? Any complains with any of them ? Thanks in advance

I am currently using the MKA-47 universal bracket on mine. It has a spot to put a lock in it but I have yet to find a lock that with fit because of how my bracket is attached to the boat. If I had added an additional piece of aluminum under the bracket, the clearance would be there but it isn't a huge issue to me because 90% of the time when not in use, it is sitting in my garage at home. If not, I will typically just remove the TM and bring it in with me.

Top be honest, I kind up gave up looking for something to lock it but now that you have me thinking again, I may be able to get a cable style lock through it with ease.

Does the TM fit snug with that bracket? Any play/rattling while on the water ?

You bolt one plate to the trolling motor and one to the boat. so yes, it fits snug. Also, there is absolutely no play whatsoever up and down. There is a little play side to side but it does not see to rattle or anything in the water. I had jammed a piece of speaker wire into the area to reduce the side to side play but the speaker wire fell out and I didn't even notice it. Ran the rest of the year with nothing in there and it didn't rattle at all.

I removed mine from my Fortrex for two reasons:

1. This thing shakes. It is not as stable as fixed permanently on the boat.
2. It's much faster to snap a lock and remove 6 bolts fixed on the boat. You snap the lock in 5 seconds and bye bye motor.

Good points Christian,

permanently affixed to the bow is the best secure way of mounting it for sure. I went to a quick release bracket because I needed to take it off and bring it in for some maintenance which was a PITA.

Other than for that reason, I much preferred to have it directly mounted but unlike the fortrex, the terrova cannot just be removed from the mount so the whole using has to go in.

This is what I'm using, it comes with several different mounting screws, one of them should fit your bracket (it did on my Power drive V2)

I'm using the fish finder lock opposed to the motor lock they show in the trolling motor section, I'll take a pic when I get home

That looks pretty good! What does it lock onto though? I ask because I have a spot to put a lock in. It is essentially two holes (one in each plate) that line up. The lock would go through them if I could find one that would fit.

I've got 2 holes that line up also, the interior hole is threaded and the screw goes into the black piece, and threads (as tight as you can) into the hole, then the lock cap goes over it all and locks up with a key. Not enough exposed space to get bolt cutters behind it, and the lock cylinder (red piece) spins freely so there is no leverage to do much with it. Won't stop someone who decides they REALLY need your motor enough to pry it right out of the deck but that makes a lot of noise which is something thieves don't want!

Thanks for the pics! Although it wouldn't work for the lock area I was talking about, I could easily use one of these for the thumb screw in the middle of the unit.

That's a good looking setup you have there canoe. I might actually look into a similar setup... Thanks again for all the input
