Outboard help

Post by jshow89 »

I have a 30hp Johnson outboard on my fishing boat, I am starting to have a problem with the starter not rising up and engaging the motor head, this only happens after I have been using the motor some, the starter spins freely just doesn't pop up, if I take the cover off and tap it with a wrench it seems to work after that, just wondering if anyone else has ran across something like this and may have some advice

I had a similar issue with a frayed wire. Before i realized it was the wire i pulled the whole starter apart and cleaned it and checked for other issue

Try spraying some lubricant on the shaft that the starter gear is on. I had the same problem, sprayed the shaft, problem fixed. Can't remember if I'd used graphite spray or Moovit.

Just spray the crap out of it with WD40. Happens to my motor at the cottage. Drys out and binds.
