I Need More Than Luck..
I Need More Than Luck..
I need a SECRET WEAPON!
My luck in the past has been nill when it comes to catching trout from local tributaries. Even with the freshest of roe or alternative methods like pink worms, nightcrawlers, lures.. I never seem to get more than tiny shakers. Well I decided to brew up a little "secret recipe roe" for tomorrow since I'm home for the weekend. Who knows if it will work.. it's stinky, and it's out of this world! But for now I'll keep the recipe secret

No Markus I never caught any steelhead on the weekend, That's my curse when it comes to steelies following me arounds still. I had one on yesterday at Caledonia and missed 2 others though. Was getting more hits than most other guys (except one float fisherman who was nailing them left & right) but like usual I couldn't get the hook set.
I'm absolutely sure the problem is my rod. I bought a noodle rod, but being the dough-head that I am, I left it up here in Peterborough when I travelled home.. so I had my reel rigged on my 7ft ugly stick. Not much of a trout rod, to say the least. I was reeaaaalllly rippin' back on the hookset, even with braided line (and flouro lead) I can't keep em hooked. Maybe I set it too hard?
I was using tiny Daiichi gold hooks.. the same size as Jammer uses (or used to use last winter) not sure of the #... is it 12?

Loose the braid, thats your number 1 fish loss right there.
The braid has no stretch, and the flouro does, thats why you go witha main line of Mono and lead to flouro. The mono allows the stretch in both lines.
Using a braid for a main line is the big reason your loosing em.
Go with 8lb maxima, iron silk, raven are the top 3, using a 6lb lead go with a 10lb main, anything lighter for a lead, go with 8lb main line.
Loose the braid, maybe gain a fish.

It's highly visible to start with...regardless whether you have a fluro leader or not, they see it. Ask Fishhawk. He showed up to fish the Niagara last year with 2 bass rods spooled with pp. He felt "comfortable" that the fluro leader would be the ticket....i could only groan. After I was up on him 5-0, he put down his pp set up and grabed my back up rod that was rigged and ready with mono...within minutes he had his first Niagara bow.
Ask RJ why he's spooling up with mono for our laker trip this year. I'll bet he'll tell ya he was tired of hearing the "tink" "tink" "tink" of my drag at the back of the boat.
Mono also stretches and allows for some much need forgiveness.
Save the pp for the slop, go with a good mono/fluro set up.
