Ottawa River Crappie

Having just moved to Ottawa from up north in the fall, my cousin had a few species to scratch off his bucket list. I got him his first largie in September, and today, I was able to put him onto his first crappies. No real big slabs were taken, but he did keep a few of the bigger ones for a fresh fish dinner.
The action was steady from 1:00 until 4:00.

FYI, there's about 7" of glare ice on Crappie Bay, bring cleats.

I'll answer that question dore ...
small jigs with very small full bodied shiners ... that seems to do the trick these days ... for some unknown reason.
plastics are very hit and miss, but you can pick up a few.

Night time crappy fishing has been tried and for soem reason we never had any luck whatsoever.

Yeah they're fussy. I had a couple hits on each of 4 different artificial presentations but I couldn't get anything consistently. All our crappie but a couple we caught on live bait rigs. Jig and minnow was good towards the end...had to go more subtle during the day.

I've had some sucess with tiny spoons tipped w a minnow or Power maggot and a dropper line with a micro jig also tipped with a maggot. Usually in the late afternoon/early evening.

I fish Crappie down my way strictly at night on small glow jigs that have been charged up with a 3 millon CW spot light tipped with maggots. I have caught them in the day but sure seem better at night down this way.
