Some come 'welded' from the factory... usually not so good for big fish.

To Make a simple one at home you can use this video.

other knots - Bimini Twist, or Bimini Twist Rapala Knot, Non-Slip Loop / Kreh Loop, Perfection Loop, Homer Rhode Loop Knot, Surgeon's End Loop / Figure 8 Loop

Has anyone had any experience with those loop attachments that are heated to shrink and bond to the end, making a loop? I saw them at a store, but just imagined my leader, and fly sailing into the woods as it let go. It seems too easy, so I'm therefore suspicious!

David,
Both LeBarons and sail carry these.

Nail knot is the way to go for leader to line connection IMHO.
Those tools make tying the knot easy and quick (after a little practice).

On my 3 and 4 weight lines I use the barbed eye sold for the purpose. Good for smaller fish. Never had one part.

For 5 to 8 weight, the nail knot is good.

I've had no problems with the factory welded loops. For larger saltwater species I'd probably make my own. While nail knots are fine on floating links, they're not well suited for sinking lines. In this case I prefer to use an Albright knot if I don't decide to make my own loop connector.

I've tied my leaders onto fly lines using nail knot and variations thereof for years. But this year I put on braided loops that RIO makes. Available at Green Drake. You thread the line through the braided loop and glue the slide over. Many fly lines come with a loop attached. I've had guides rip off on knots so you really should have a smooth knot which you can augment by putting on UV Knot Sense.
