Weekend fishing on the Ottawa River
Hey guys
Went fishing this weekend in and around L'orignal on the Ottawa River. My daughter and I both caught what we think is either a small whitefish or herring, can somebody assist with identifying.
Thanks
Dan

That's a fallfish. (Both lake herring and whitefish have smaller scales and an adipose fin)

Are they any good to eat? Is that a normal size for this fish?

No good to eat. That's an average size, and honestly, I don't think I've ever caught one on the Ottawa.

Fallfish, you can catch them by the boatload in Algonquin Park.
I'll believe Yan when he says they don't taste good, I've never tried one, but when I did some research online some people actually do eat/enjoy them.

I've never tried one, but I've never heard of anyone keeping one. They might be a delicacy for all I know but generally people don't keep them.

Maybe it's hidden gem. We were catching them in the Park this spring, some of them were pushing 1lb-1.5lbs.
