When the year’s shad reach bite size snack and venture away from shoreline,
The shortening daylight, the first cold frontal passages and even colder nights are what give fall fishing its rightful term.
With only a few hours to spare after work, we decided to hit one of the local G-Town bay.
Took only but 2 cast to hook our first decent fish.
For the most part, cranks were the lure of choice, ShawnD did manage to also hook one on the jig.
Rocky drop offs were targeted, 12fow, 60ish water temps.
Also, if any of you idealize the Periscope app, feel free to post your handle on this thread.
ShawnD live streamed a few tid bits when on the water to share with viewers, pretty cool app.
Now to get ready for that Rideau event….something called Megabucks?
P.S. don’t pay any attention to ShawnD looking like a “small person” on that last picture, I assure you, it’s only but a bad camera angle!

That's a monster?
I also caught another one:
Considering we only had about 2 hours of fishing and we pull about 7 Bass, 3 Pikes, 2 Crappies. I'd say it was a good night out.
With the warmer weather we should try to get out again!!

Aw this title is so sweet for you two.. gives me the warm and fuzzies!
Re: I've Fall'en for you!
Those are great looking fish - must've been a blast! May I ask which body of water this was on? Were they schooling up on the dropoffs?
I was on the Rideau this past weekend and I only caught a couple of small largies near deeper weed edges. From the looks of it, they've vacated those areas, so I've got no idea what to target. =(

Kliven, that was on the Ottawa River, if you were fishing the Rideau this past weekend the bite was very tough.kliven wrote:Those are great looking fish - must've been a blast! May I ask which body of water this was on? Were they schooling up on the dropoffs?

The Ottawa Valley Bassmasters had a tournament on the Rideau and after speaking with the other anglers the bite was extremely tough.
Stick to the deep weed edge, Jigs, spinnerbaits and keep working it.
Good luck.

From what I can gather, they were schooling.kliven wrote:Those are great looking fish - must've been a blast! May I ask which body of water this was on? Were they schooling up on the dropoffs?

IMO, it's all about the baitfish come fall, they'll move from the deep end, to the shallow end, and all in-between the water columns in no time. Some days, you'll get hit in 10'+ fow, and others in 4' or less, it's an unpredictable time of the year.
That being said, crankbaits will cover a wide range of depths and also cover lots of water.
I prefer burning them, seems to trigger more strikes in this time of the year, they'll chase'em!
I was running a shallower crank than Shawn, and it paid off.
When bass are schooling and busting shad, that window is usually short, maximize your casting and have a few follow up rods ready to go if needed.
Have fun!
