A bunch of other stuff had occupied my time lately, and with Turkey season ending on Tuesday, this weekend the remaining tag started getting itchy. An earlier start than the beginning of the season by 1/2 hour, lengthening daylight. Got up early, a quick cup of coffee and off to the woods.
The mozzies sure were hungry, but once the gobbling started the bugs were easily ignored. The hens are on eggs but the Toms are still very active.
After working the gobbling birds for about 30 minutes, two birds finally came in, with the bigger in the lead. When the big Tom stepped into the clearing, a few mozzies surely popped as my blood pressure rose a few PSI.
No doubt this was the dominant Tom, all snood and attitude...a limbhanger, hooked 1" spurs and a 9" beard. And with a bang, big bird is down and the 2016 season is a wrap!!
This year the season started with a Tom on opening morning, then a few great hunts with my son, and finally a 2nd Tom to bookend the season. Good times.
