Light action rod and reel suggestions

Post by Troller »

Hi Folks,
I am looking at purchasing a light action rod and reel combo for the up coming spring pan fish season. My budget is about $80.00 max. I have an old light action baitcasting outfit already. I am looking for a spinning outfit. I am interested in any suggestions on what other folks use. Also the type of line you use. I cant wait, only a few more weeks I hope...
Thank you,
Dave

Hi Dave.
Just got back from Florida. Bought a new reel down there. We have 2 Penn Fierce 3000 reels and I had a chance to buy a new reel. Saw the Penn Fierce 2 3000. It was $59 dollars at the local tackle retailer. Put it on the lightest spinning rod we have down there and caught a 30" Bonnet head shark on it and then a 26 "snook out of my kayak. It is a great reel for the price. The 4000 is $89 at Cabelas. They don't list the 3000 but they may be able to get it. We use the 3000 Penns all the time when fishing Charlotte harbor.
The first 2 Penns I bought are 4 and 5 years old and have only ever seen saltwater.
I have a Shimano Saros reel $180 that I use and then wash that is nicer than the Penns but double the price.
I have been extremely impressed with these Penns and I see lots of them on charter boats and private boats in the launches we fish.
I forgot to mention that the Fierce 2 has the bait runner feature as well.
That's my .25 for what it is worth.
Good luck with your purchase.
Mitch

On sale down from $99.99 to $49.99. Would look at the 7 footer, or 6.6... light to ultralight.

But at $80 that doesn't leave much room on the reel.
