A Little Open Water Trout Action!!!

Post by JimW »

Well beautiful weather and calm winds, just could not resist, my boat is not ready to hit the water yet, so made some last minute plans with a couple other guys and we went searching for open water lake trout this past Sunday.

This would be our first time targeting lake trout on the big water in early spring, so our goal was simple..... catch at least 1 fish.

No downriggers on the boat so we planned a 4 rod set up mix of 5 colour lead core and braid with snap weights running spoons, deep diving crankbaits and spin n' glows.

After some fun getting out to the open lake through the a few miles of sketchy ice and slush we were fishing!!!

It did not take long and we were into some fishy action, which pretty much lasted all day...lots of fish caught, a couple got off and even more hit our baits but did not stick. No huge fish, but a good average size.

All in all a great start to the open water season!!! Looking forward to the next fishing/boating adventure.

Very nice ! Looks like a beautiful spring day. Thanks for sharing.

Itching to get out myself. The new C&R spring season for Bass on Lake O will also offer some options. What launches are open ? Collins Bay, Bath, Finkles ?

The "open" launches are "iffy" on Eastern Lake Ontario right now due to ice an low water levels and can change from open to closed with ice pretty quickly. We had to push through several miles of slim ice and large sheets of broken up, but 4-6 inches thick to get out to open water, we were about 8-9 miles from the boat launch.

I am hoping to hit zone 20 catch and release bass very soon!!!
