I would say connect the transducer and see what it reads.

Could be you are getting a fake reading because of the transducer not being connected.

I have had mine wrapped for the past 3 years, then store in on blocks in the side yard.

I have had no issues doing this and find it works very well. I get mine done in Ktown too, I just take it to the boat place accross from Disneyland.. Ward's I think its called.

I don't know what is one there. I would assume its treated to kick the elements.

What size step? I say just go with some presure treated 2x? depending on size. I mean if he does not work out, you are only out like 7$

I use about a 2' floro leader tied to a swivel attached to my main line braid.

This is the first time I have tired this year in the past I just tied directly to braid and really had no issues.
