Could be you are getting a fake reading because of the transducer not being connected.

I use about a 2' floro leader tied to a swivel attached to my main line braid.

This is the first time I have tired this year in the past I just tied directly to braid and really had no issues.

Its always better when you have someone else out with you that I agree with.
