Re: Algonquin fishing
For drive in access your best option would be to look into what is available in the North Frontenac Parklands , though you'll find that shore access to pretty much all of the trout lakes in the region to be pretty much non-existent. Some form of watercraft is a must to effectively fish any of the la...

Re: float tubes
For the lazy rivers sections of say the Rideau or Mississippi you could use a float tube, though any river with faster flow you're limited to a pontoon or raft style boat for safety reasons. I would not recommend fishing (sit on top) kayaks as they are specifically designed for lakes/calm water.

Re: Bass Pro buying Cabelas - Effect in Ottawa???
As some have already mentioned the store that is opening is a 70,000 sqft Cabala's Canada store, as opposed to a Cabela's (USA) super store. Just as customers were disappointed with the Target stores when they opened here, the same will most likely happen with Cabela's as anyone that has visited the...

Just use the MNR's Fish ON-Line app to find the stocked lakes that are relatively close.

Assuming you're fishing Ontario, Brookies that size are a rarity in Zone 18.

Re: The End of Cabela's? Let the speculation begin....
Doesnt matter much to me if they buy cabelas, I have no problem with either store. The only bonus as I see it is maybe BPS will finally wise up and follow cabelas lead and have a canadian website and distribution centre. Unfortunately the Canadian website (from what I've seen) pales in comparison t...

Re: magnifying lamp
It's really personal preference, though a good light makes tying easier especially when working with smaller sized flies. Myself I have a Lee Valley magnifying table light, which is also portable. Some fellow tiers use the Ikea LED work lamps.

Dan has take a few nice ones in the past from his tube in Dow's Lake, not to mention a huge walleye.

Re: new fall strategy
If I'm chucking big wind resistant bass bugs/poppers or heavy wet bunny strip streamers, I'll use my 8wt. With my 4wt I can easily cast Closures, hopper-droppers, etc. Given that you haven't mastered hauling and shooting line yet, I would take advantage of any local casting clinics / courses to impr...

Re: new fall strategy
Around here a 5wt is more than adequate for the majority of situations you'd encounter, whether fishing for trout or SM. The heavier rods are typically specialized for particular species or style of fishing. If the only reason to move up is to get a longer cast, I'd recommend casting lessons before ...

Once the water temps drop the crayfish disappear and the SM switch over to baitfish for the fall pig out!

Re: late hex
If it was a Hex hatch it is definitely a late hatch as they're usually finished by early August. In any case, #6 Stimulators are always good to have in your box for just such situations. This time of year you're more likely to encounter an Iso hatch, which is just a good.

Re: Fishing Rideau River help
I picked up a number of feisty 13" SM today, wading the back channel at Long Island. There are 3-4lb fish out there you just have to find them and present something that they'll take. Contrary to popular belief that big baits are needed to catch big fish, you'd be surprised at how a big fish th...

Re: Clyde River
That particular stretch of the Clyde is a warm water fishery and from what I recall it is predominantly slow moving with a soft bottom. Give the Mississippi a try at Blakeney or above the dam at Appleton for SM.
