That's the thing. The tip-up action is restricted to the field of vision of the small ice hut window. If you set-up the tip-up outside of the view of the window, you miss a lot of hits.

Sometimes the way to go, is getting behind a simple tarpaulin, to stay warm. You don't get that closed in feeling, and on only but the coldest days, are sufficient to keep (warmly dressed) ice fisherpeople comfortable. We had enough room behind one 10' tarp to have two snowmobiles back to back so's ...

At what depth did you catch the 1st one?
Nice fish, by the way!

I'm guessing it may have weighed 9.5 lbs.

The jigging action reminds me of the Windlass tip-up. Wonder about the practicality factor though. When you hook a large fish (if only we are so lucky!) it looks as though you would have to pick the entire thing up to move it out of the way, as it is directly over the top of the hole. What about a l...

I've had good success with the 4" swedish Pimple in chartreuse/silver, and the red/silver. I also like the Whistler Jig. It comes with a silver propeller just behind the head. I have caught Walleye while using them on a jigging rod. Here is the link via Firefox web browser, or just Google: Whis...

A Fin Bor model will allow two anglers to each put a hand on the top handle of the auger in order to make drilling an 8" hole easier through deep ice.

The other model you may have mentioned comes with that off-set handle which makes it impossible for two anglers to assist in the drilling.

The white spots alongside the big fish, would suggest a Pike, rather than a Musky.

10 lbs is more likely more than enough, depending on the style of anchor. What is equally important is a lenght of heavy chain, oh about ... five feet or so. The chain will assist in keeping the anchor from slipping or dragging the bottom. A long rope is also necessary. Check out this weblink: http:...

Keep in mind that planer boards come in either right or left handed, meaning one will run Starboard, whilst the other will run Portside. If you buy only one planer board, make sure you get the one that will run to the side of the boat that you want it to. The first time I bought one, I had to take i...
