Re: Stimulator!

Good looking fly! I have thought about using foam but haven't yet, this may just get me to try it.

The GL-Upper St Lawrence population is assessed as threatened and hasn't recovered from earlier over-fishing (mostly...

I have looked at their plans with interest, too. I built a boat off Dynamite Paysan's plans (http://www.instantboats.com/). The one I built was the Gypsy without the sail rig. It is really stable and handles well with oars or an electric motor. A smaller version of the same design is the Cartopper. ...

I flipped the picture to a DFO invasive species specialist in Burlington. He identified it as a carp/goldfish hybrid based on only one pair of barbels on the mouth. Carp have 2 pair of barbels. Eli had it pegged and it's not an evil asian carp, just a frisky mongrel minnow.

In addition, Gross and Kapuscinski (1997) showed that greater than half of fall smallmouth bass recruits were produced by 5.4% of spawning males in a Lake Opeongo embayment, suggesting that very few individuals are capable of producing a large number of offspring. from Zipkin and others, 2008, Canad...

I was a hardware chucker for years when I met Jack Imhof and started creel surveying on the Credit River. I saw a lot of fish caught on flies and a lot of fun being had and had to try it. One is never enough and here I am, a happy fly fisher and gear head. The boy has started tying flies too but he ...

it's obvious that the climate-change deniers have done a good job at confusing the issue. another problem is relying on media reporting that looks for controversy to sell papers, magasines, whatever and have no real training to tell good science from good advocacy. Canmoore has some stuff right, scie...

Try out Lake Windermere or Como Lake, near Chapleau, both have lodges/camping and I have seen some huge pike in (actually out of and on dock) both lakes. Como Lake is the deeper of the two and has nice whitefish as well and lots of walleye,of course.

a beadhead substitute is bead chain. I use it on a few patterns for weight and it looks a bit like eyes too. For panfish though I don't really find that I need weighted flies, the fish are usually shallow and the flies sink just fine with hook weight.

I'd just use regular exterior grade ply, personally leary of toxins in pressure treated wood. I built a 16' boat out of regular ply, just painted and it has stood up great to a lot of (ab)use.

I got a video of Mel Krieger's casting techniques from the Ottawa library, maybe they have Lefty's too. And the dvd is free (if you return it on time). Mel's was good for really laying out the fundamentals of casting if you can't find Lefty's.

I tried out all the formulas posted: the just length cubed formula gives 16lbs, length x girth formula gives 35lbs and the lunkerlink carp formula gives 30lbs.

Bottom line: excellent fish, many congrats and keep these posts coming, brightens the day spent in a cube

In an area with little existing structure, I think this would be a great idea, but agree with the need to consult the MNR or the local Conservation Authority. That link is a good bit of info. My inlaws had a place on a shallow bay up north, no structure, flat sand/muck bottom and the bass would key ...
