Todd, I had a similar thing happen to me this spring at Manotick Mill. Hooked a middling sized crappie on a nymph. With the sky clouded over I couldn't see the fish but all of a sudden it was like it was on steroids and then it just stopped moving. Fishing a 5 wt (like yourself) I couldn't budge it ...

Beachburger, You can pick-up a pair of waders for $70.00 at Canadian Tire. I spent my budget on all the other gear at the start of the season so had to make due with these. They definately do the job but next year I'm getting something breathable. The places around Ottawa you pretty much need them t...

Champlain Bridge/Ottawa River

Went out on the Ottawa this morning and got there for about 0830. Located a ledge dropping off into a deep pool and started to throw a size 6, olive woolly bugger into it. The bass were hitting it like crazy for the first hour or so but then began to ease off until by 1100 there was nothing I could ...

Unfortunately I didn't do much better. 3 undersized fish on the Ottawa side (where you guys were) and 1 even smaller one on the island. I had 2 others on the hook (one of which was a good size) but they spat my muddler minnow out. You latched into a good catch the other night, where abouts were you?...

Sounds like a good day. I'm keen to give the Ottawa a try but I've heard it can be dangerous wading if your unframiliar. Any advice?

I just bought a video on fly casting technique, watched it and then spent a couple of hours practicing in a field. After that I headed out and hit the water. Not too hard once you get the hang and then the distance comes with time.

You won't regret it. This is my first season and I practically addicted! It's much more fun (and productive) than any other type of fishing I've ever tried.

Good luck!

PS- At least you wife come with you.

Mississipi River

Anyone tried for SM bass on the Mississipi? I cross it on my way to and from work and thought that it looked pretty good in some of the faster moving areas. The Rideau produced lots of action for me on the opener but the size left a bit to be desired.

Thanks for the update guys, I've got the locations now. Do both require a float tube/boat or could I get up there for a bit of wading prior to the arrival of the in laws?

I've had a look on Google Maps for Shiner L. and Lower Twin L but I'm getting a bit stuck. The only result for Lower Twin is near Huntsville on the other side of algonquin and nothing is coming up for Shiner at all. Looking on the map there are Black Donald and Centennial Lakes in that area............

OK, so assuming I can get my hands on some form of tank or helicopter to access one of these locations would someone be kind enough to PM some places that are worth checking out?

Calabogie area trout fishing

Guys, I've just moved to the Ottawa area from England and I'm currently enjoying the plentiful fly fishing opportunities available in the area. The inlaws are coming for a visit and renting a cottage in the Calabogie area in the not too distant future. I've seen a bit of discussion (here and elsewhe...
