Bonus Pickerel

I always get a kick out of catching a pickerel on the fly. You just have to work your way thru a couple hundred crappie and sunfish to get at them.
Top fly Pearl Zonker tyed on a good old Mustad 3366 size 6.

Re: south of the border

Mission acomplished but thats all. I actually caught a Brown Trout [10- 12 in.] on the fly, along with a half dozen small Brookies. I've got miles to go to with tactics and technique. I'll take my hat off to the upstaters for making the most of the rivers they have, with stocking, public fishing acc...

south of the border

I've had my fun with the crappie and got the casting arm in shape. I'm planning to head over to NY next week and try for trout. I'm thinking of trying the St Regis or Salmon rivers south of Malone. Does anyone have experience, tips or advise they can offer on that area.

Re: crappie on the fly

I found the crappie bite sluggish with the cold dreary weather. Yesterday the two fly rig saved the day. I started with the #6 pearl grizzly buggar and had little action, other than the odd sunfish, mostly just nipping the mariboo tail. I thought if the sunnys are biting I'll go with the flow, and a...

Re: crappie on the fly

The warm spell has got them back on the bite. I got 23 in an hour and a half this morning. Top fly the grizzly buggar. Yesterday I did try a two fly combo the bluegills like it, the crappie weren't in, but it is fun to get two at a time. I think the one your fighting puts a lot of action on the othe...

Re: crappie on the fly

The crappie seem to be hit and miss, it looks like they move into the locks after a day or two of warm sunny weather and move out when its cold and cloudy. Top fly still the schminnow.

Re: crappie on the fly

Seems like the crappie have moved out and the pike moved in, got four small pike on about ten casts. Top fly "pearl chenille and grizzly buggar" on a j2 604 # 6 jig hook. I've also got a streak going, fly fished 4 days in a row. I'm going to see how long I can keep it going.

Re: crappie on the fly

I've "rod and reel" fished all my life, and just started fly fishing a couple of summers ago. Some of the biggest differences I find between the two are fly fisherman pay way more attention to the bait. I now can identify several species of stoneflys, mayflys, and midges, who knew. Another...

crappie on the fly

Here we go, got some nice crappie this afternoon on the Rideau system locks. Top fly, a white "mariboo clouser" tied on a mustad 3366 # 6.

The fly would be more accurately called a "schminnow", tied in a smaller version. A simple and effective crappie fly.

Re: Early, Early Trout Season Tactics

When it comes to leaders thru innocence or ignorance and getting infomation form different sources, I developed my own system. On the Intermediate and sinking lines, I use fluoro leaders with fluoro tippet, on the floating line I use mono leaders with fluoro tippet. I found that tapered leaders have...

Re: New Fly Fisher

Isn't it an unwritten rule with fisherman not to divulge spots, especially fly fishermen. I think that spot might be on the mississippi, and I might have launched my pontoon boat on the upstream side of that bridge, see older posts. :D

Re: Early, Early Trout Season Tactics

I have cheeky reel. I ordered a triple play package direct from the manufacturer. They seem to be reasonable quality at a reasonable price with different levels to choose from. I have them rigged with leaders on, in the vest, which happens to have back pockets for spare spools, so its minutes to swi...

Re: Early, Early Trout Season Tactics

My plan of "attack" for the still waters, is get right up to as many as I can in my 4X4 tj jeep then utilize my pontoon boat, which I can launch pretty much any where. If that goes well I might invest in a lite weight float tube. I would probably go for the outcast trinity, at 7 lbs I think...

I agree with this and I also believe you could do some serious damage to the smallmouth fishery in the area's rivers and streams if you started keeping limits.
