Re: Looking for advice on catchin bigger bass.

I too share your struggle. This year I tried three way rigs for smallmouth, and I have had some success. Mostly 2.5lbs size fish, but I think the concept is good. On days with a little breeze I set up a 3 way rig so that the swivel is about 24 inches off the bottom, and the line on the horizontal sv...

Re: Family Tripping in BC and Westcoast fishing

Very nice report. Your pics brought back many memories. Thank you. Did you take in some mini golf in Parksville? They used to have really good mini golf there.

Re: Combos for kids (5&8)???

Congrats on the purchase. My kids, 5 and 3, have 5 ft ugly sticks, and they work like a charm. Good size for small hands, and they can use them for years (hopefully)

400 kg sturgeon

Simply unbelievable. There are some things about the west that are just awesome. The text is below, but the pics in the article are really something. http://www.cbc.ca/m/touch/canada/british-columbia/story/1.2676051 Giant sturgeon caught on Fraser River Fourth giant in 2 years to be captured on the ...

Re: Best pike lures?

IMG_20140614_213418.jpg Our carp. Caught on ultral light ugly stik, 6 lbs fireline crystal, with a 1/4 or 1/8 oz chartreuse jig ( can't remember exactly) with 1/2 a crawler as we drifted up a drop off from 15ish feet to 8ish feet. I assume the jig hit bottom as the rod was in a holder while I was d...

Re: Best pike lures?

Just a quick note to say thanks to everyone who responded on this thread. There are a tremendous number of options, and we will give as many a try as we can. I guess the challenge now is finding time for the water, and cash for tackle :).

Thanks again,
Sourdough

Re: Best pike lures?

Thank you for the continued advice. I note that a few responses suggest Zara spooks. Where does one find them in the Ottawa area. The CDN tire in kanata does not seem to have them in stock.

Re: Best pike lures?

Thanks for the tip about swimbaits. I have seen Doug Stange use them for walleye on TV. I would have thought her were a little small most pike. I am under the impression they will eat pretty much anything, but look for prey about a third of their body size. My son is 5, turning 6 at the and of the s...

Re: Best pike lures?

Thanks for the replies. I have seen the luvky craft on the rack and thought they looked interesting. I will definantely pick one up. I will also give spinner baits a shot once bass season opens. Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

Best pike lures?

Hi all, My son has been asking to go pike fishing (he always wants to catch big fish :)). Last year we boated a few small ones, and he got pretty hooked, pardon the pun. So, I started doing a little research to increase our chances. For for anyone else curious I found the esox hunter website quite i...

Re: Opinions on gear and line setup

Regarding swivels: I usually use a wire leader with swivels when lots of pike are around. I still catch bass/walleye. Granted, I am not in a tournament or anything like that, but it seems to me that for most situations the effect of a swivel on lure action is less important than getting the depth of...

Re: Jigs

Not quite as traditional, but I had good success with some of the lead free offerings from TimmyToms. Mostly green/brown conbinations or black/black and blue combinations of football jigs or what they call jiggle jigs. They come through the weeds quite well. My kids also did quite well with their pa...

Etiquette question

I am new to fishing in these crowded southern waters. After last season (my first in Eastern Ontario), I would appreciate a little advice about etiquette from anyone willing to weigh in. Where is it ok to clean fish? on the water? at the launch? best done at home/camp? If a launch has room, is it ok...

Catfish have spines?

A little after the fact, but since I joined yesterday, I thought I would ask. I was out at Shirley's Bay two weeks ago and caught a catfish (about 5.5 lbs) while trolling a crankbait through shallow water (2-4 ft) in front of the mouth of bay where the rifle range is. I was heading into the shallows...
