I have a 97 johnson 50.did the same thing on the StLawrence.Had to replace power box on the other side of engine from throttle links ,Little black box about 3 inch by 3 inch with a bunch of wires going to it.very easy to replace,as for cost don't know it was under warranty at the time.Hope this help...
