Calabogie Area Winter Access
Hey guys, I'm looking for some info on how to access the crown land area west of Calabogie in the winter. I'm not looking for specific lakes etc, I'm familiar with Fish-On for where to target. Just looking for some info or resources on where I'm able to drive to and park in order to access the hard ...

Re: Pike cut offs
I use Seagar 50# and have yet to lose a fish.
If it's big you do usually need to cut off a bit after you land one though.

Re: Flyfishing Newbie
Depending what weight rod you have, its great bass fishing this time of year on a fly rod. Whooly buggers and poppers are great for this. You shouldn't get bird nesting in your reel. set your drag for what you'll be fighting, and you have your line off the reel floating when your casting. I only ree...

Re: Bug Attack!!!!
Clothing colour makes a big difference too. Always where light colours. If they aren't crazy I always opt to cover up. Light coloured long sleeves, pants, a hat and gloves. If they still bother me I use Bens 30 on my hands and exposed skin. If they still bother me I'll put on a bug jacket. I've done...

I was in yesterday thinking of grabbing one of these and they were all gone in the bargain cave.

Re: Flouro leaders Just Curious
I also use the Flouro/Braid combo on all of my rods. I use 20# braid for bass/pike/walleye and switch the leader weight/length for what I'm fishing that day. I connect the two using perfection loops on each line in a handshake knot. I find this the easiest/quickest to tie and you can switch leaders ...

Re: Silver Lake
Silver opened up Saturday mostly. I drove by in the am and there was still a layer of ice but the wind broke it up by 6 pm. There was still a portion of the west end covered but most of the lake was free of ice.

Re: Early spring shore fishing - Jock River / Ottawa South
I've never had much luck on the Jock myself. The Rideau is probably a better bet for big fish if you can find a spot out of the current that's shallow. I'd wait until the thaw current drops a bit myself. Pike usually spawn pretty shortly after ice out and with the early thaw you could technically fi...

Re: Shirley's bay 2016
How far of a walk out would it be to where people are fishing? I've never fished Shirley's bay but may give it a shot next week and I'll be walking to the spot.

Re: Found them!!!
That's wild. If I had to bet those fish were stocked that size and recently. Great fishin! RJ I would guess the same, fairly fresh stockers. Usually the fresh stockers are the most agressive, they will hit anything that's in front of them. Guys you may well know something I don't. I totally agree a...

Re: float tubes
I agree with staying away from a tube around moving water. I personally use a kayak when I want to access deeper water, but I always leave the waders at home if I take it out. I either wade shallow, or kayak deep. I haven't come across a river where I couldn't walk around a section that I wasn't wad...

Re: new fall strategy
+1 for getting some local help and work on hauling. Todd helped me out this year a few times.. Another thing to try is to play with your leader length when your switching from nymphs to larger flies. With a small wt rod I always shorten my length as I go bigger in fly size. If you find the cast does...

I landed a 17# on my 6wt bass gear in the Bronson area a few weeks back. It was pretty awesome.

Re: St-Lawrence River, the death of me!
Also, if you can't figure out the uni-uni knot, or it is too tedious/time consuming like I found. Try two perfection loops in a handshake configuration. They tie in a couple seconds and you don't have to cut your main line to change your leader. The loop in the braid is a bit more of a pain but you ...
