Well, it certainly isn't the "only" de-icer as FF points out; however, I have used it with results better than the chapstick option.  These options will take you so far on a cold day with reapplication required.

there are several musky hot spots from the mouth of Grass Creek to Gan.  Don't discount this stretch.

Just a note that Port Hope launch is not available due to high water level; however, Cobourg is fine.  Cost is $10.50 which includes launch and parking.
