Story in the Ottawa Citizen today. According to this, the Ontario MNR is revisiting the big minnow issue for Zone 18 and changes are forthcoming.

ok next year mabe there will be something about ''WORMS'' no worms over 6 inch long..allowed on the ottawa river..

The story mentions the use of gorge hooks and big bait contributing to the mortality rate of large game fish. First of all, who still uses gorge hooks? If they're what I think they are, I haven't seen 'em on store shelves in years. Even your average joe angler who uses only minnows to fish has evolved to a single barbed hook and sinker hasn't he?

A little birdy gave me some inside info on this last week....who works directly with the MNR...

Muskies Canada was directly involved in this being pushed thru...so thank them for that...

Another source told me that most folks at the MNR were just as surprised as we were to read about that new reg...

Can anyone on here tell me they have ever used a gorge hook and a 5 inch plus minnow for lakers?....most lakers in our region would be afraid of a 7 inch minnow...

I really hope the MNR takes a good look at things in the future when it comes to listening to Special Interest Groups and their agendas....they really dropped the ball on this one...

There is a petition on the counter at Bennetts last weekend in regards to this issue....I gladly signed it...

Rural Affairs Critic Hits the Ground Running

Just three days after being appointed Rural Affairs Critic, Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington MPP Randy Hillier met with Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) officials and approximately 80 local businesses from the OLA - Eastern Ontario Outdoorsmen branch to discuss the Ministry’s harmful new regulations on bait fish.

The new regulations place unprecedented restrictions on the sale of bait minnows, a move that would cause serious financial harm to the industry. Up to 70% of revenues will be lost by the bait harvesters and dealers under the new regulations. In addition, the ripple-effect throughout the tourism sector will result in measurable harm and loss to people’s livelihoods throughout rural Ontario. During the meeting, which was organized by Mr. Hillier, MNR officials acknowledged that this new restriction was “unintended” and could not explain its inclusion in the new fishing summary.

“I applaud the MNR officials for finally consulting those affected by their regulations,” Hillier said.

Amending the newly-crafted regulations will require the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) approval. The MNR officials present confirmed they will be briefing MNR Minister Donna Cansfield on the problem immediately. Hillier requested the MNR seek immediate approval from DFO for these corrections. Furthermore, Mr. Hillier advised the participants that he will contact his Federal counterpart, MP Scott Reid, requesting the DFO Minister act upon this matter urgently.

“This over-regulation, and regulating without public consultation, seems to be the norm and not the exception with the McGuinty Government. Having heard from the true stakeholders, I urge Minister Cansfield to act quickly to alleviate this injustice,” Hillier concluded.

Here we go again attacking Muskies Canada with lies and insinuations.

Maybe a member or 5 pushed for this but it wasn't the organization. I am a member on the National Executive Committee and we never covered this and I've never seen anything about MCI doing something about it.

This is just like the tournament recommendations, yes MCI had something to do with those but it was with the help of expert biologists as well as MNR representatives.

Muskies Canada does so much great work but no one comes out and acknowledges the club for all of it's efforts but some are quick to come on here and write rumors and lies about the organization. This organization is run by a lot of great guys who volunteer their time for a great cause and all we hear is bitching and moaning from the grandstand. Why don't you guys become doers instead and the agitators.

This is getting out of control. If you have nothing good to say maybe you should just STFU.

i have always found. if tou want change to go about things in a positive manner. if you want change lobby for it. the best approach is good hard evidence. also a feel for the fisheries does help. as richards stated m.c.i. has done lots for anglers. i have fought battles for and against thoughts from m.c.i. the one thing is i am a member in southern ontario. fishing clubs and organized groups can change politics. ya just need an honest effort. negativity only brings out pack mentality and mis informed views.
