8:30 opening morning, Turkey down!!! - pic added

Hey guys,
Got my first turkey this morning:D. Just a jake, but all the same, what a rush! I saw 4 of them running through a field near an area I had been scouting since last year, knew exactly where they were headed. Walked as slowly as I could to intercept them. Gave a couple calls, got a couple gobbles back, set up where I thought they were headed, and 5 minutes later all 4 of them were within 10 yards of me. I took the first one my set-up would allow me to get a good shot at, and the rest is dinner! :D:D:D:D




Now it's the wife's turn, hopefully I'll have more to post this weekend!

JUST A JAKE !!! nice bird i have shot lots of big birds and they never taste as good as the little ones. Now you have lots of time too get a big one.

I really enjoy the antics of the jakes.. sometimes they run right in and surprise you, other times they are just not interested figure a tom is going to jump out and beat them up:)

all turkets are good turkeys (not hens though I dont care what the fall rules say) and like Tinman said,, the jakes are definetely better eating

Yeah I'm sure they're great eating! I was just stoked that I got one. We came so close last year. Yeah those Jakes were interesting to say the least, they went from spooked and running to gobbling and running right at me in about 10minutes. Hopefully they're not too far away by the weekend and the wife can get one too.

Can you give us a gear/technical equipment guide for all of us who are into that kind of stuff... Like ammo brand, gauge, calls Ect.

As per Kuno's request: the gun used was my grandpa's old break action 12ga which he gave to me last fall, ammo was 2 3/4" Remington #4 Turkey Load, call was a HS mouth call, I had a Flambeau decoy on me but didn't use it. I was wearing a Columbia camo shirt that was on clearance at Lebaron's last fall and the camo hunting pants that were 80$ off at Canadian Tire last weekend.

FYI, the NWTF turkey hunting chair (bought at Lebaron's) is a godsend! Thanks Mom and Dad for the great gift!! The chair made it easy for me to stay low to the ground and was exponentially more comfortable than the little round butt pillow + tree trunk combo.

Oh, and Google Earth! Great way to find nice bush/agriculture transitions on the edges of public lands. I would have never found that spot had it not been for GE and I've got a few more lined up for scouting this fall.
