Just curious to see how everyone judges the age of buck, after seeing the pictures from RJ's QC bass trip, Have a look at the second photo, first buck. How old you think this buck is and what critereia do you use to judge that?

Shoot him, then look at the teeth.

That is one way

sure but...a deer will not wear down his teeth the same rate if he lives in the Canadian Shield versus farmland in SE Onatrio due to the food he eats, I would think.

I was just kidding around - I know your question was serious.
I think it is quite difficult to tell age from a distance. I would guess the deer in pic 2 would be about 3-4 years old, but its just a guess. Back sag, facial lines sort of things.

Good to know O4T I am always curious on how one ages deer. I would agree on the 3-4 yrs based on neck the and barrel of the animal. I knew you were kidding. We need more humour in our days...especially Mondays

Actually, the only way to age a deer is by the teeth. Just do a web search for videos and info. I was going too post a link, but there are TONS of them.
Antler mass, weight, muzzle, back-sag etc are signs that a deer is really old (read too old to eat), but for a deer from 0 to about 4 1/2 years old, teeth are the only way to get a handle on the age.
Any older than that and you're just guessing anyhow.

I was told the easiest way is to cut him in half and count the rings!
