older shimano symetre

Just what the title says....anything and everything related to Rods, Reels, Terminal Tackle, Plastics, what others are using, what works, what doesn't work, and anything else you want to talk about regarding equipment.

older shimano symetre

I recently picked up a whole bunch of fishing gear from kijiji. This old Symetre 2000 came with the deal. It looks very nice but the real doesn't seem very smooth. Would it be worth putting some new/replacement bearings in it? Or is it a old piece of junk? :?:

Symetres are/were rock solid. Not sure if Shimano would have parts for a reel that old though.

Take the side plate off for a start and pop the spool off. Visually inspect first, then work it to see if that gives you any more clues. It could well just need a good cleaning. Pretty sure Mikes Reels would have a drawing of that reel which will help with reassembly after you clean everything up. There could even be instructions online from Shimano. If it turns out to be dirty bearings you can try to clean and relube them. Soak and/or spray them with with solvent to clean. Blow them dry with air if you have some, but don't spin them at high speed if they are dry.
If the bearings are sealed you can remove the retaining clip and covers using a needle, or I prefer a #11 Xacto blade. Keep your fingers over it just in case. :wink:

When you remove the spool some of those reels have a pin that the spool rides on ..even with the proper tool they can be a bugger to get out ...you need to remove that pin to get the rotor off ....It most likely just needs a good cleaning ..YouTube has videos on how to break your reel down and get it back together..As stated parts might not be available so take extra care not to lose anything

Best advice right here! These things are tanks and are not a mouse trap waiting to be sprung like some reels that you take apart.

Only thing I would add is to take pictures or videos of each step so you can get the correct order and orientation for reassembly.
