40hp Johnson, no spark?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

He told me that he thought the motor needed a new pump (told this when I went to pick it up, not on the phone).

I will not slander his name accross the board regardless.
Sportspal, you are being quite a gentleman about this ... good on ya!!!

As for the symptom you are describing, it does sound an awful lot like a fuel pump problem. But, in relation to your stripped threads reply early, it may also be a compression problem.

Can you do a compression test on this motor? It may not be ready for the graveyard yet.

Well, I think the stripped threads is quite fixable. It appears that only a few rounds of the thread are messed up. Nothing a tap and di set won't fix.
As for the fuel pump, when I had the fuel pump off, I blew into the pump, and felt that the diaphram was intact, and one I replaced all the fuel lines, I could see the fuel moving into the glass ball on the bottom of the pump.
I'm going to take a quick look at the carberator tonight. Hopefully something is being blocked there that I can quickly fix.

I haven't done a compression test on it, since I was told "the motor has lots of compression" when I bought it, and being a rookie to all this motor nonsense, and at the same time believing I could trust a FishHawker......silly me.

I'm sure I can find a tester around to test it, but I'm going to check a few other things, and finally put those pictures up....
It may not be ready for the graveyard yet

Totally Unjustified Dissin'!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Cyber »

Hey Sportspal :x :x :x

Listen Buddy!! I really don't appreciate & take great offense to being called a "C*_*r"!!!!!
You have absolutely no right to dis' me like that over our transaction :!: :!:

#1: Age of the motor: I had no idea what year it was made in, I was just passin' along what the guy I bought it from told me!!!
And anyways, the year it was made doesn't mean SQUAT, it's the number of hours it's been used, & you & I both know it was clean as a whistle under the cowling. An old 2 Cylinder Iron Horse like that will outlive both you & I put together with proper maintenance & a little T.L.C. :!: 8) 8)

#2: Stripped Plug Threads: I never had the plugs out of it, so I didn't know any problem existed there!!!!

#3: Dry Spark Plugs: I told you RIGHT UP FRONT that it needed a fuel pump, the only way I got it running was to fill up the glass bowl with fuel mix & the only way I could keep it running was to keep squeezin' the shee-ite outta' the primer bulb. I did this in a big green garbage can, I never put the motor on a boat, so I never bothered to do anything further to fix it permanently. It ran fine the way I just described!!!!!

So therefore I don't feel I misled you intentionally in ANY way, shape, or form :!: :!: :!: A 40 H.P. motor for $500., what did you expect anyways :?: :?: , one still in the fricken' packing crate from the O.M.C. Factory :?:

In the future keep your trash talk OFF the public threads, you got a problem with me you can P.M. me, or better still, call me, you have my phone #!!! NO need to crap all over me on a public message board that everyone reads!!!!!!!

I have a lot of good stuff still left to sell, and I don't need "BULLS**T" bad publicity like that to scare everyone else off!!!!

YA YA, I know you didn't name me "outright", but anybody who follows the posts on this site doesn't need a University Degree to figure it out!!!!!!

Cyber.

"C*_*r", 5 letters, was simply my code for your name. I have no idea what you think it means...if it means something I am not aware of, I apologise.

The only thing I am upset about is the age of the motor. Regardless, we both told incorrectly, and the same incorrect information was filtered to us both. You paid cash for what you were told was a mid-late 70's motor, then I turned around and did the same thing. We were both ignorant in not finding out the true age of the motor.

Stripped plugs....no worries. I stated in my last post,
Nothing a tap and di set won't fix
So, its a non-issue.

Yes, you mentionned the fuel pump might need to be replaced. I don't think I was misled in that regards, and I don't believe in any of my posts that I attempted to plead ignorance on this. I am perfectly ok troublshooting the issue, and fixing it as originally planned.

Regardless of you having the motor running or not, I can't seem to get it to run, not that the problem itself isnt my noobishness when it comes to motors.....

So therefore I don't feel I misled you intentionally in ANY way, shape, or form A 40 H.P. motor for $500., what did you expect anyways , one still in the fricken' packing crate from the O.M.C. Factory

I'm sorry that you feel like I trash-talked you, the thread merely started as a request for help, and I think its quite evident that everyone else formed their own opinions, regardless of how I tried to remain diplomatic.
The only slightly negative thing I said was that I'm not impressed.

Unfortunately, I don't think your last post won you any buyers.

I'm glad to see there are lots of guys on this board willing to land a hand when others need it. Its much appreciated. You all know who you are.
Hopefully we'll get this thing up and running before too long. :D

Apology To Sportspal!!!!!

Post by Cyber »

  OOOOOOPPPPSSSS!!!! MY BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Sportspal!! Bear with me as I attempt to remove "mon pied" from "ma bouche" I took the definition of "C*_*r" totally in the wrong context :!: :!: I assumed it to be a derogatory comment of a word which contains 10 letters   , so you should be able to understand my 1st reaction :? :?

Anyhoo, please excuse my jumping to the wrong conclusion, guess I've just spent too many years with my mind in the gutter

And I sincerely wish you only the best with that motor!!! I'd hate to think I'd sold you (or anyone, for that matter!!) a totally worthless item!!! I'm sure you'll get 'er goin', just need some "trial & error" trouble-shooting!!

Don't forget about the guy I mentioned to you! I'm not positive but I think his 1st name is Dave & he lives at 1266 Woodroffe Ave. (west side just a few houses north of the Fire Station). He has a basement chock full of "goodies" for older engines & he won't charge you the cost of a new limb for stuff!!! That's where I got the controls & key switch & wiring for that motor.

BTW Markus, that post of "Judge Judy", priceless!!! Got me LMAO & really helped de-fuse a situation I thought could become a real "Battle-Royale"

So to everyone who had to suffer through my "Rant", again I apologize   , it just proves to me, AGAIN, that I've got to remember to put my mind in gear before letting out the clutch on my mouth!!

Hopefully someone with more engine "savvy" than I have can help Sportspal get that "Ole' Gal" purrin' like a kitty!!

Take care All!! And "Happy Fishin'" this weekend!!! Cyber Out! 8) 8)

Just to clarify what D-Mo has posted abot the 39 Evinrude. Yes , I bought it from Jigs and he was straight up with me on it. I knew it was siezed before even looking at it. I picked this up for a hobby piece. If it runs after the teardown , Bonus, if not it was a great experience to see how things were made back in 1946 ( which is the actual year after researching the serial and mod nums on the block). I have it torn down to the cylinder heads and thats where it is siezed. Lower end is off and turns like new. Expecting a challenge with the coil and points to get them firing, even thought they are in remarkable shape for the age of the motor. As for DMos reference to Siezeamatic, thats the great ribbing that friends get and give all the time.

Cheers ,

UPDATE

Post by Sportspal »

Well, another month brings better news.
Many thanks to Crash for his wiring schematic he sent me, zort10 for his offer of looking at a similar motor, and basstalker for offering to lend his manual for the motor.

I ended up pulling out the stripped plug, removing the head and installing a heli-coil insert since the threads were unrepairable. This fixed the plug issue, and restored the spark.

I then tried to start the motor, but noticed gas leaking from the hose that goes from the tank to the motor. A good squeeze made gas shoot everywhere including on my head

So, a new line was purchased, installed, and when I squeezed, I could hear the gas shooting through the lines....good news!
Tried to start the motor, no go, and no fuel on the plugs....trouble I thought. :?
I poured alittle bit of gas into the head, re-installed the plugs, and on the 3rd pull.........I woke up every neighbourwithin a 1/2 mile radius. The motor really roared and echoed through my garage and neighbourhood.
8)

Well, I've got a working motor now 8) , I just need to work on the remote controls, install a steering wheel and cables, remote start, and a windshield. No more than a good days work, or a week at my snail pace I work at.

But, the biggest problem is solved, and a many thanks to everyone who offered insight and aid!!!!!! :)

Best Wishes

Ps: Posted before I seen the second page. Good to here the motor is up & running. Glad to here the electrical diagram I sent Crash helped.
